Obituary

Alice I. Allen, 101, of Portland, Maine died on Sunday, June 5, 2022.

She was born in Portland, a daughter of Christian and Isabel (MacKay) Jessen. She attended Portland schools and was a graduate of Deering High School and Northeastern Business College.

Her husband John E. Allen, died in 1977. She was predeceased by their only son, Keith J. Allen, in 1986, and also by her brother, Neal A. Jessen, in 1981, and her sister, Olive P. Jones, in 2009.

She and John enjoyed vacation trips through northern New England, New York and eastern Canada, including destinations in the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania, the Adirondacks in New York, and the Laurentian Mountains and the Gaspe Peninsula in Canada. In her later years she enjoyed traveling with the Venture Club of the YWCA. Earlier in life she enjoyed skiing, golfing and bowling.

After experiencing a year of working in Boston right out of school she was employed in the offices of several local companies where she met her husband while working for American Oil Company. For most of her working years she was secretary to the Controller and Treasurer of Maine Central Railroad Company. After retiring from there she worked as recording secretary for the Planning and Zoning Boards of the Town of Cape Elizabeth, which was her home town for 38 years. She also worked as a volunteer in the office of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society for several years.

She was a member of Central Square Baptist Church and its Women's Fellowship and was a former member of Osewantha Garden Club and the Business and Professional Women's Club.

Surviving are a  nephew, Donald N. Jessen, of Sudbury MA, a great niece, Jaime Jones-DeScherer of Brunswick, and a great nephew, Matthew Jones of South Portland; also, special friends David Virella and his husband Scott Donaghy of Portland.
