It is with great sadness that we share with you the passing of Arthur Edward Marles on October 17th, 2024.

Arthur "Archie" was born in Portland on Christmas day 1938 along with his twin brother, Billie. He grew-up in North Scarborough with his parents, William and Gertrude, and his brothers Billy and John. He attended a one room schoolhouse in North Scarborough for his elementary years, continuing through the Scarborough school system and graduated from Scarborough High School Class of 1957. He was active in many sports and notably was on the very first Scarborough High School soccer team.

He met the love of his life, Diane, at a Buxton Grange Hall teen dance in 1956. They celebrated 57 heartfelt years together before Diane's passing in 2020.

After high school he enlisted in the Maine National Guard to fulfill his military obligation and attended SMVTI studying electronics.

His first employment after his SMVTI graduation was at Raytheon in Lewiston, eventually working for Fairchild Semiconductor in South Portland. During this period, he and Diane adopted their two sons Brian and Greg. An opportunity arose in 1967 to work in California and the family spent the next 3 years in Campbell, California. Returning to Maine, they family settled in South Portland near Willard Beach.  Archie returned to school part time at Gorham State Teachers College (now the University of Southern Maine) studying mathematics. He had the intention of becoming a  teacher, however, an opportunity for a supervisory position at Fairchild made teaching financial unrealistic. Archie spent many years working for Data General as the plant production manager only leaving when the Westbrook facility closed. Summers were spent at the family camp in Shapleigh.

Later in life, Archie refurbished Diane's mother's seasonal camp on Sebago Lake into a year-round residence where they lived for their remaining years.

Archie was true family man, his focus was supporting and raising his family. Some of the biggest joys in his life included spending time with family and tinkering with various household repairs or building projects. He was essentially DIY before there was DIY. He was an avid sports fan and would watch almost any sport. However, Red Sox baseball was his biggest passion. He greatly enjoyed attending his grandchildren's many sporting events. He greatly enjoyed fishing as well.

He was an active member Standish Congregational Church serving as a Deacon, Trustee, and on the Nominations committee. After Diane's passing, he kept himself busy volunteering at the Standish Food pantry. Weekly food pick-ups with Bill Tracy and his beloved dog Brady sitting on the middle console.

Archie is survived by his two sons Gregory and Brian Marles, daughter in-laws Nicole and Katie Marles, grandchildren Nathan (wife Carolina), Zac (wife Akadia), Tugg, Solveig, and Sierra Marles. Great grandchildren Porter, Arthur, and soon to be Eve Marie.

A memorial service will be held Friday October 25 th ,10:30am, at Standish Congregational Church, 25 Oak Hill Rd, Standish. A graveside service will follow at 2pm, Woodlawn Cemetery, Westbrook.
