Obituary

Scarborough - Barbara C. Lally LaVopa, 91, formerly of Scarborough, Maine died December 14th, 2023.  Barbara was born to Patrick Joseph Lally & Elizabeth Croston Lally in Bronx, New York.

Barbara and her younger brother Joseph spent their childhood years in the Bronx, New York.  As a young girl and into her teens Barbara loved reading.  She also loved walking and biking in the city with her girlfriends.  She enjoyed horseback riding and would save up her allowance money in order to ride at every opportunity.  After high school she worked as a secretary for the New York Commission for the Blind until her marriage.

She married Giuseppe (Joseph) LaVopa of the Bronx, New York.  While still in New York they had 2 daughters, Linda and Laurie.  In 1959 they moved to Kennebunk, Maine where their son Robert was born.  She was a partner with her husband in their business bringing and then distributing Stella D'Oro baked goods to Maine and later on Pepperidge Farm baked goods in Maine and to California.  They later returned to Maine where they owned and operated the Blue Point Motel on Route One in Scarborough for many years.  Her beloved husband of 64 years preceded her in death in 2020.

Barbara was a devoted wife and mother.  She was a wonderful cook and specialized in many of the Italian-American favorites.  Many of her favorite recipes have been handed down and we still enjoy them today.  Barbara had a love of dogs and cats and had 2 German Shepherds, Taffy & Buddy and 2 lovely cats Trina & Misty.  She loved reading mystery novels, especially those of Agatha Christie.

Barbara is survived by her 3 children.  Linda and her husband Rob Crooker, Laurie and her husband Kevin Knight, Robert and his wife Rosemarie Mazzone LaVopa.  She is also survived by grandchildren Jennifer Crooker, Jeffrey Crooker and wife Rebecca, Commander Anthony LaVopa USN and wife Christine and Juliana LaVopa Elliott and husband Marcus.  Great grandchildren Zaynab, Fatimah, Aishah, and Amr Alhawary, Zackary and Alex Crooker, Anthony and Cristiana LaVopa, Taylor and Kaycen Elliott.  Great-great-granddaughter Amani Howard.
