MY LIFE AND TIMES

Clyde Ellsworth Nason, Jr.

I grew up and lived in South Portland, Maine until 1998 when wife Martha and I moved to our chalet at
Mt. Abram Ski Area in Greenwood, Maine.

On February 16, 1957, I married the love of my life, Martha Beatrice Knight. Martha was born October 11, 1935, the daughter of Cecil Raymond and Alice Marion (Pombriant) Knight. She attended schools in Portland, Maine and graduated from Cape Elizabeth High School in 1953. She graduated from Gorham State Teachers College in 1957 and earned a Master of Science in Education Degree (MSEd) in 1968 from what had become Gorham State College.    '
MY EDUCATIOIN: Evans Street School, Grade K thru 3; Frank I. Brown, Grade 4 thru 8; and Graduated from
South Portland High School June 1951. Entered Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine that fall and graduated June 1955 with a Baccalaurei Artibus (Bachelor of Arts Degree).  At Bowdoin I majored in American History with a minor in German (and English). I was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega (ATO) Fraternity.

BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA - (BSA) I was, for a short time, a Cub Scout. Soon after, I joined Troop 21 as a
Boy Scout. My father became the Scout Master and we soon transferred to Troop 24. I Earned my Eagle Badge
in 1946, earned 56 Merit Badges and had 2 silver palms on my Eagle. I spent the better part of fourteen summers at Boy Scout Camp William Hinds in Raymond, Maine and was the second Scout in Pine Tree Council to be honored with the Vigil Honor of the Order of the Arrow. I served as Cub Master for Pack 23 in South Portland for a brief
time. I was on the Troop Committee for Troop 22 and later, when my son, Clyde III was Scout Master, on the troop Committee for Troop 800 in Raymond, Maine. I attended a National Jamboree in Valley Forge, PA in 1950.

MILITARY SERVICE: June 1955, I graduated from Bowdoin Senior Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC). Commissioned Second Lieutenant (2LT) Artillery, US Army Reserve. I joined the 901st Field Artillery, 76th
Division (Reserve/Later Ready). I was in Service Battery at Fort Williams, Cape Elizabeth, Maine and assigned as Ammunition Train Commander. I was ordered to Active Duty for Training in April 1956 and served six (6) months at Fort Bliss, Texas, the first fourteen weeks, of which, was a student officer in Officer Basic Course (OBC-14), Antiaircraft Artillery (AAA), later designated Air Defense (AD).  As the 76th Div. was later reassigned as a Training Division, I served in the 417th Regiment as Company Officer and Adjutant, in the 304th Regiment as Platoon Leader, as Company Commander, and as Plans and Training Staff Officer (S-3).  I was transferred to Brigade Headquarters (HQ) to serve as Supply Staff Officer (S-4) First Brigade.  I was returned to the 304th after a year and assigned as Executive Officer (XO).  Later I transferred to the 1033rd U.S. Army Reserve School where I taught Command and General Staff (C&GS) courses to other Reserve Officers.  During my military career I graduated from the Infantry Officers Career Course at Fort Devens, MA, C&GS School (a 5-year course), the Industrial College of the Armed Forces (ICAF), and Air Force War College.  These courses were through group study programs, I retired from Active Reserve Status in 1983 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) having served for twenty-eight years.  I am a life member of the Reserve Officers Association (ROA).  ROTC at Bowdoin was Transportation Corps. I volunteered branch transfer to a combat arm and was, therefore, commissioned in Artillery. At the time I was eligible for promotion to Major my MOS (Military Occupational Specialty) was obsolete. l transferred Branch to Infantry and was promoted on time. During my military career I received the Armed Forces Reserve Medal (AFRM) twice and was awarded the Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal (ARCAM). I was officially retired from the U.S. Army December 26, 1992.

OCCUPATION: Following my tour of Active Duty in Texas I returned home to a tight job market. In the spring of 1957, I began a twenty-nine-year career as an elementary school teacher. As my BA from Bowdoin did not qualify me for a State of Maine Teaching Certificate, I had to take numerous Education courses to become certified. I was placed on the Substitute Teachers list in Portland, Maine and worked several weeks, one at Cummings School and several at North School. That fall I was hired full time and started on a one-year Special License, with a fourth grade at Baxter, Chapman, and then at Reed Schools. In 1960 I was transferred to sixth grade at Longfellow and later, when the sixth grades were moved to Middle School, to Lincoln. The many Education courses led to enrollment in a Masters program. I earned a MSEd from Gorham State College in 1967. While teaching I was a member of the Portland Classroom Teachers, the Portland Teachers Association, the Maine Teachers Association, and the National Education Association. I am now a life member of NEA and belong to the Maine Education Association-Retired.

Once my Active Reserve obligation was completed, I started doing carpentry during summer vacations. This led to a full-time "Self-Employed-Contractor" business once I retired from teaching. I continue this business beyond my 75th birthday.

INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF LIONS CLUBS; LIONS CLUBS INTERNATIONAL (LCI):
My father sponsored me in the South Portland Lions Club in 1958. I served on several committees, was elected Tail Twister for one year, and Assistant Secretary for several! years. Later I was elected Club Secretary and was 100% Secretary for seven (7) years. I was District 41-L Outstanding Secretary of the Year and Best Club Secretary for Multiple District 41 (MD41) for the 1980-81 Lions Year. I was elected First Vice-President 1985-86 and
100% President and District 41-L President of the Year 1986-87. I served as Cabinet Secretary/Treasurer (CST) twice, 1982-83 and 1990-91. I was a Region Chairman twice 1991-92 and 2003-04. I was elected Lieutenant Governor (LTG) for District 41-L (1992-93) and was 100% District Governor (DG) 1993-94. I served as Council Secretary/Treasurer for MD-41 (1994-95).        ·
The South Portland Lions Club honored me with the George H. Hinckley Award, named for the Club's first president, in 1976; with the Harlan "Pete" Higgins Award, named for Past District Governor (PDG) Higgins, 1981-82; and a Melvin Jones Fellowship, named for the founder of Lions, in 1994.
1n 2002 I transferred to the Harrison Lions Club, Through the Harrison Lions Club, the Board of Directors of Lions International conferred Life Membership to me on September 17, 2004.
I have served on many committees at the District and Multiple District level and as Certified Guiding Lion for the new Waterford/Stoneham Lions Club November 2004 to June 2007.
1 have attended 5 USA/ CANADA Lions Leadership Forums: Nashville, 1990; Oklahoma City, 1992; Winston-Salem, 1993; and with wife Martha, Halifax, 2001; and Fort Worth, 2002. We have also attended three (3) International Conventions: Brisbane, 1991; Minneapolis, 1993; and Phoenix, 1994.  Martha joined the Harrison Lions Club in 2003.  We were both Associate Members of the Bethel Lions Club.,
As 1 have sponsored eleven (11) new members into Lions, I hold     a Builder Key Award. I have maintained 100% attendance since joining Lions in 1958.    '
