Obituary

SCARBOROUGH - Connie M. Flaherty, 83, of Scarborough, passed away unexpectedly on

October 28, 2026, at Maine Medical Center following complications from a series of recent

health events.

Born on May 25, 1943, Connie was the daughter of Albion and Florence Hurd and was born

and raised in the Pine Point section of Scarborough. Growing up in a family rooted in

Maine’s fishing industry, she developed the strong work ethic, resilience, and sense of

community that would define her throughout her life. Her family’s roots in Pine Point ran

deep, and she took great pride in her heritage and the generations who helped shape the

community. Her father, Albion S. Hurd, was honored through the naming of Albion S. Hurd

Park in Pine Point, a beloved gathering place enjoyed by residents and beachgoers each

summer.

After marrying her beloved husband, John T. “Jack” Flaherty Jr., Connie began a new chapter

on the family farm. Together they built a life centered on family, friendship, and hard work,

sharing nearly 63 wonderful years of marriage. While raising their three children, Connie

supported her husband’s farming efforts and the family’s agricultural way of life. She helped

during potato harvesting seasons and devoted countless hours to preserving and canning

food for her family. The values of dedication, perseverance, and family that shaped those

years remained at the heart of everything she did.

Before starting her family, Connie worked for the telephone company. Following the birth of

her children, she returned to the workforce, first at Bradlees and later with the Town of

Scarborough Excise Department. It was there that she found her true calling. Connie

genuinely loved working with the public and helping the residents of Scarborough. Her

warm personality, friendly smile, and willingness to assist others made her a familiar and

beloved face at Town Hall.

Upon retirement, Connie embraced life with the same enthusiasm and energy that she

brought to everything she did. She became an active member of the Pine Point Quilters

Guild and enjoyed nearly a decade of winters spent in The Villages, Florida, with Jack. There,

she formed many lasting friendships, immersed herself in exercise classes and activities,

and relished the opportunity to enjoy an active outdoor lifestyle year-round.

Connie’s interests were many. She was an avid square dancer, enjoyed candlepin bowling

and gardening, and remained a lifelong and passionate Boston Red Sox fan, a loyalty

inherited from her father. Whether tending her gardens, preserving the harvest, quilting

with friends, or cheering on the Red Sox, Connie found joy in life’s simple pleasures. Friends

and family often joked that Connie never truly retired. Her thriving canning business, for

which she maintained a certified license, kept her busy nearly year-round, producing

countless batches of homemade jams, jellies, relishes, pickles, and other treasured goods.

Whether selling at the family farmstand, Flaherty’s Family Farm, at local craft fairs, or in

The Villages, Connie took pride in sharing her creations with others. Many looked forward

each year to receiving or purchasing one of her homemade specialties, prepared with the

same care and generosity she showed throughout her life.

More than anything, Connie cherished her family and friends. She will be remembered for

her warmth, kindness, determination, and remarkable ability to connect with people

wherever she went. Whether through her work, quilting, dancing, canning, or simply

sharing a conversation, Connie made lasting impressions on those fortunate enough to

know her.

She is survived by her husband, Jack; her daughter, Christine “Tina” Flaherty; her sons, John

T. Flaherty III “Tom” and David Flaherty; her sisters, Sally Howes and Sharon Haskell; her

three grandchildren, Christopher Flaherty, Paige Flaherty, and Faith Flaherty; and her

cherished great-grandchild, Oakley. She was predeceased by her parents, Albion and

Florence Hurd, and her sister, Barbara.

Her passing leaves a tremendous void in the lives of her family and friends, but the

memories she created, the friendships she nurtured, and the love she shared will continue

to live on.

Services to celebrate Connie’s life will be held at Hobbs Funeral Home, 671 U.S. Route One,

Scarborough, Maine, on Friday, November 6, 2026. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00p.m.

with a service at 12:00p.m. and a graveside to follow at Scarborough Memorial Cemetery.

Family and friends are then invited to gather and continue celebrating

Connie’s life at the Flaherty’s Farm Event Barn, 128 Payne Road, Scarborough, Maine.

The family invites all who knew Connie to remember her by sharing an act of kindness,

spending time with loved ones, or enjoying one of life’s simple pleasures, just as she always

did.
