Craig Stallworth Hobbs, 55, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer, leaving behind a family and community whose lives are immeasurably richer for having known him.

Born on August 25, 1970, Craig entered the world with a spirit of adventure. During the first two years of his life, he traveled throughout Europe while living with his family in Paris, France, riding from country to country in a baby carriage. That curiosity and joy for living never left him.

Craig had a rare gift: wherever he went, people wanted to be there too. He was the one who brought the laughter, organized the games, planned the gathering, started the campfire, and made everyone—from lifelong friends to complete strangers—feel like they belonged. His circle of friends grew throughout every stage of his life because once someone met Craig, they rarely stopped being his friend.

He graduated from the University of Maine at Orono with a degree in Economics, where he met Jen, the woman he would forever call the love of his life. Together they built a beautiful life centered on love, laughter, and family. Craig later earned a master's degree in Social Work from the University of Maryland.

Craig worked as a social worker at Spring Harbor Hospital before joining Eli Lilly Oncology as a Territory Consultant.

Although his work was meaningful, Craig's greatest joy was always his family. He and Jen chose to raise their family in Maine because he wanted his children to grow up surrounded by nature.

His favorite place was the Hobbs family camp on Great Pond in the Belgrade Lakes. Every Fourth of July he organized camp games for children and families, bringing together everyone on the point. Winters were spent skiing at Saddleback and Sugarloaf, while summers meant boating, fishing, golfing, campfires, Irish coffees, and the haunting call of loons across the lake.

As a youth sports coach and later as the father of Bates College baseball player Nolan, Craig became famous for the tailgates he hosted before games, where everyone was welcomed as family.

Craig is survived by his beloved wife, Jen; his children, Allyson, Emily, and Nolan; his parents, Bruce and Roberta Hobbs; his sister and brother-in-law, Beth and Shelby Goldman; his nephews, Tyler and Will; his niece, Madeleine Hardee, her husband, Colton, and their infant son, Benjamin, along with countless extended family members and dear friends.

When asked how those who loved him would know he was still with them after he was gone, Craig answered simply: "Think of me every time a child catches a fish off the dock."

May every child proudly holding up their first fish, every campfire, every Fourth of July celebration, and every loon calling across Great Pond remind us that Craig's spirit lives on in the memories he created and the love he shared.

Visitation is scheduled on Sunday, June 28th from 2pm-5pm at Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
