Cape Elizabeth - David L. Schroeder, 80, passed away on Saturday, September 23rd at his home in Cape Elizabeth after a long illness.  David was born on July 12, 1943 in Damariscotta Maine.  The son of Carroll L. and Ellen M. (Stevens) Schroeder.  He attended Newcastle Grammar school, and graduated from North Yarmouth Academy where he participated in many sports including wrestling and the rifle team.  He then went on to study Technology and Anthropology at USM.

After college he went into the construction trades and became a partner in Clifford Construction.  He also worked for S&H Concrete Company, Cook Concrete, Berry Concrete and eventually retired from the business as a superintendent for Keeley Construction.  He had many projects he was proud of over the years including Back Bay Towers, Portland's first 15 story building.

When he was not at work, he enjoyed membership in several rifle and pistol clubs, and thoroughly enjoyed being an amateur archaeologist finding buried artifacts along the shores of Casco Bay.  For seven seasons, Schroeder and Mammie opened their home to Portland SeaDogs Players as they came into town working their way to play for the Red Sox.  Schroeder was one to share his many talents with building by lending a helping hand with projects for family and neighbors.  Schroeder's personality was larger than life.  Always known for his quick wit and quirky sense of humor, he was the life of the party.  He will be remembered for always being caring and compassionate to those around him and bringing smiles to everyone in the room.

The family wants to send special thanks to many who have helped with Schroeder's care over the last several months including Maine Strong Balance Center, CenterWell Home Health and Northern Light Home Hospice.

Schroeder was predeceased by his father, Carroll Schroeder, his mother, Ellen Schroeder, and his grandson Skyler Hewitt.  He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth "Mammie" Schroeder, his sister Becky Sawyer and her partner Roger Burleigh, his son Christopher Hewitt and fiancé Holly Billings, Step son Jeff Brannen and wife JoDee, Step daughter Lynne Cross and husband Jay.  Grandchildren, Ben Rautenberg, Mason Cross, Emerson Cross, David Brannen, Matthew Brannen, Dylan Brannen.

Visiting hours will be at Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Rd, South Portland, ME. Wednesday September 27, 2023 from 4PM - 7PM.
Private graveside service for family  members will take place on Thursday.  In lieu of flowers, and in honor of Schroeder's love of history, memorial donations may be made to the Maine Historical Society - 489 Congress Street Ste 2, Portland, ME 04101.
