David M.
Wood
Nov 13, 1948 — Feb 5, 2024
David M. Wood, 75, of Scarborough passed away February 5, 2024. David was born November 13, 1948, in Belfast, Maine to Walter and Alberta Wood. He graduated from Belfast Area High School, Belfast, Maine in 1966 and the University of Maine Orono, Orono, Maine in 1971 with a degree in Public Management. David was a member of the Air National Guard for six years.
Most of David's working years were spent working for HP Hood. He spent many years as a milkman delivering in the greater Portland area before ending his career with HP Hood in the shipping and receiving department. Later in life David drove for Meals On Wheels in Portland, Maine and volunteered at the Maine Veterans' Home – Scarborough.
On January 27, 1973, David married his college sweetheart Anita Caouette. In 1976 David and Anita moved to Scarborough, Maine where they spent their lives raising their family in a loving home. Together David and Anita had two sons.
David enjoyed many activities with his wife, but his favorites were bird watching at their feeders during morning coffee and playing games such as Scrabble and Cribbage in the evening after dinner. He loved to spend time with his granddaughter Beckett. He taught her to march in place, danced with her in his living room, and would spend as much time as he could reading to her while she sat on his lap. David was an avid Candle Pin bowler and a member of several teams during the last twenty plus years at local bowling alleys.
David's greatest passion was as an Amateur Radio Operator. He had a large collection of radios and antennas that he loved to operate. His call sign was KB1FGF and he held the Amateur General License. He spent many hours each week making contact with other radio operators both locally and around the world. He was a longtime member of a number of local area amateur radio clubs. David's greatest gift was his personality. He loved to make people laugh. He had a quick wit and always had a funny joke to share. His easy-going demeanor, big heart, and even bigger smile had a way of making people want to be around him. He was a natural people person and a great storyteller!
David was pre-deceased by his parents, Walter and Alberta Wood, and his sister Sylvia Bates and her husband John.
David is survived by his wife of 51 years, Anita; sons Matthew Wood and his wife Jillian and Steven Wood; and granddaughter Beckett Wood. David is also survived by his sisters: Carolyn Maricondi and her husband Chris, Donna Sawyer and her husband Cliff, Dianne Senechal, Debra Wessels and her husband Harry, and Natalie Woodward and her husband Ernie and brothers: Roger Wood and his wife Letha and Douglas
Wood and his wife Diane as well as many nieces and nephews.
