Douglas Ralph Gallant

Douglas Ralph Gallant, age 78, passed away on July 3, 2026. Born on July 27, 1947, in Rumford, ME, Douglas lived a life marked by extraordinary service, brilliant scholarship, and a deep dedication to his community and country. Known by those close to him as one of the gentlest souls one could ever meet—a trait perhaps nurtured by growing up alongside four sisters—Doug carried a joyful spirit and a love for laughter throughout his days.

His early education included time spent at The Mother of the Savior Seminary in Blackwood, NJ, before he returned to his hometown to graduate from Stephens High School. Douglas went on to serve honorably in the United States Navy from 1965 to 1969, a tenure that included two tours in Vietnam, where he used his remarkable gifts as a medical interpreter. Following his military service, he pursued his passion for words, earning a Master’s Degree in English from the University of Maine at Farmington.

Douglas dedicated his professional life to public safety and federal service. He initially joined the Portland Maine Police Department, serving his local community with distinction. His unique expertise and brilliant mind later led him to a career as a federal agent with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS). An astonishingly gifted linguist who knew several languages, his work investigating global terrorist activity took him to many corners of the world, continuing to support the military community he had once served as a sailor.

Blessed with an insatiable curiosity, Doug was an avid reader who balanced his intellectual pursuits with a deep love for the outdoors—whether he was meticulously tending to his yard, enjoying a round of golf, or playing a competitive game of tennis.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Theresa (McKenna) and Ralph Gallant, and his beloved wife, Lynn Gallant. He is survived by his children, Martin Gallant of Portland, Oregon, and Amy Lacey and her husband, Joseph, of North Charleston, South Carolina; his four sisters, Jennifer (and husband Jerrold Cohen), Julie Boyer (and partner Wayne MacDougall), Joyce Richard (and partner Bruce Kirn), and Joan Gallant (and partner John Voisine).

Doug was loved greatly in life and will be missed beyond words.

A private military service will be held at a later date in Jacksonville, North Carolina.

Our family is deeply grateful to the staff at the Maine Veterans' Homes in Scarborough for the compassionate and professional care given to Doug during his final months. Their unwavering dedication and kindness brought comfort to Doug and our entire family, and their generosity of spirit will never be forgotten. We cannot thank them enough.
