SOUTH PORTLAND - Edward C. Foley Jr., 79, a devoted family man, U.S. Army veteran, and lifelong baseball enthusiast, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, November 29, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Portland, Maine, on January 23, 1946, Edward was the son of the late Edward C. Foley Sr. and Tomasina S. (Maietta) Foley. He grew up in South Portland and was a proud graduate of South Portland High School, Class of 1965.
Shortly after graduating, Edward honorably served his country in the U.S. Army for three years, including a tour in Vietnam. Upon returning home, he began his long and dedicated career, first working for Caron & Waltz for 10 years before joining the City of South Portland Public Works department, where he worked for three decades before retiring in 2008.
Edward was an active and engaged member of his community. He was a longtime participant in several local organizations, including the Holy Cross 400 Club, the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), the American Legion, and the Knights of Columbus.
A passionate sports fan, Edward's greatest joy outside of his family was baseball. A dedicated Boston Red Sox fan, he also held season tickets to the Portland Sea Dogs for 14 years, cheering on his local team with enthusiasm.
He was predeceased by his parents, Edward C. Foley Sr. and Tomasina (Maizie) Foley; and his brother, Thomas Foley.
Edward is survived by his beloved wife of 42 years, Shirley A. Foley. He also leaves behind his first wife and the mother of his children, Barbara Foley. He is survived by his daughters, Stephanie Foley and Colleen Foley and son Brian Foley. He is also survived by his grandchildren Alice Ricks, Christopher Foley, Megan Ricks, Brayden Foley, Isabella Foley and Marcus Foley and his great-grandchildren Jordan Parker, Jalen Sawtell, and Logan Foley. His memory will be cherished by his extensive family and friends.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, December 7, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland. A funeral service will take place at the funeral home on Monday, December 8, at 11:00 a.m. Following the service, burial with military honors will be held at Calvary Cemetery in South Portland at 12 p.m.A reception will take place at the Elizabeth Hobbs Hospitality Center at Hobbs Funeral Home at 1:00p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Ed's memory may be made to the Knights of Columbus.
