Edward James Valente, 94, passed away peacefully on November 4, 2026, at his home in Scarborough, surrounded by his loving wife.
Ed was born on January 26, 1932, in Portland, Maine, the son of Anthony T. Valente and Mary F. Canning. He graduated from Deering High School, where he played varsity football. On August 30, 1951, Ed enlisted in the United States Air Force, beginning a 20-year career in military service. He retired on December 1, 1971. He later worked as a civilian employee for the United States Coast Guard at the South Portland base from 1973 until 1999.
Ed had a way of lighting up any room he walked into with his infectious smile, quirky sense of humor, and the twinkle in his eye. He loved sharing his gifted vocals and was always ready to sing a beloved song whenever someone asked. He spread joy to so many people and made many friends along the way. Ed was incredibly kind, endearing, and truly one of a kind. He enjoyed music, playing guitar, ham radio, gardening, and, of course, singing.
Above all, Ed treasured his family. As a husband and father, he always did his best to protect and provide for those he loved. To his wife, Sandi, he was not only a wonderful husband but also her best friend. He made her laugh often, even when she didn't quite understand the story he was telling. He was passionate about food and always told Sandi she was the best cook. Ed especially loved sweets, and together they shared many happy years enjoying one of his favorite pastimes, dancing. He even taught Sandi how to dance, and it became something they cherished doing together.
Ed will be dearly missed by his wife, Sandi; his daughter, Cindy, and her husband, Eric Jurgenson; his sons, Chuck Valente and James Valente; and his grandsons, John and Michael Valente. He is also survived by his sisters, Roseanne and Gloria, and his brothers, Robert and Anthony.
He was predeceased by his parents and his first wife, Mitsuko Valente.
Ed leaves behind a lifetime of memories, laughter, music, and friendships. He will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor, his kindness, his love of singing, and the happiness he brought to those fortunate enough to know him. He will be deeply missed by his family and many friends.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 11, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Hobbs Funeral Home in Scarborough, followed by a Burial at Black Point Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. and a reception at Hobbs Funeral Home, Scarborough at 12:00 p.m.
