Obituary

Florence Elizabeth (Wilton) Maguire, 85, of Scarborough, Maine, passed away on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, after a stroke, surrounded by the love and prayers of her family.

Born on New Year's Day, 1940, in Providence, Rhode Island, to Joseph and Alice (Marion) Wilton, Florence had a flair for timing—arriving on the very first day of the decade, setting the tone for a life filled with spark, curiosity, and heart.

Florence was raised in Somerville, Massachusetts, where she graduated from Somerville High School in 1957.  Drawn to caring for others and unafraid of hard work, Florence earned her nursing diploma from Mount Auburn School of Nursing in 1960 and completed her Bachelor's Degree from St. Joseph's College in Maine in 1974.  Her career as an operating room nurse took her on adventures from the skyscrapers of New York City to the heat of Miami to the hospitals of Boston.

In 1976, Florence married the love of her life, John Maguire.  They made their home together in Winchester, Massachusetts, where they raised their children, Andrew and Catherine.
Florence embraced family life—volunteering at the children's co-op preschool, joining the PTA, and staying actively involved in her children's lives as they grew.

After retiring from her role as a school nurse at Lexington High School in 2003, Florence and John moved to Scarborough, Maine, where she enjoyed diving into genealogy, tending to her gardens, and taking in the natural beauty of the coast.

Florence adored being a grandmother and found renewed youth in her bond with her granddaughter, Nola.  The two were inseparable—trading jokes, snacks, and stories like old friends.  It was one of the greatest joys of her life.

Florence will be remembered for her fierce loyalty to family, friends and community, her sharp humor, and her endless interest in the lives of those around her.  She had a gift for making people feel seen and loved.  She never missed the chance to check in, to ask how things were going, and to offer a kind word or a bit of encouragement.

She is survived by her beloved husband, John Maguire of Scarborough, Maine; her son Andrew Maguire, daughter-in-law Jennifer O'Neill, and granddaughter Nola Maguire of North Yarmouth, Maine; her daughter Catherine Maguire and beloved granddogs Mia and Kane of Everett, MA; and her brother Thomas Wilton, his wife Susan, and their son Michael of Windham, Maine.

Visiting hours will be from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday, May 27, at Hobbs Funeral Home, 671 U.S. Route 1, Scarborough.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Wednesday, May 28, at St. Maximilian Kolbe Church, 150 Black Point Road, Scarborough, followed by a committal service at Black Point Cemetery, Scarborough.

In lieu of flowers, consider a donation made in Florence's honor to the Saco Bay Garden Club (SBGC c/o Marcia Lord, 1 Hayfield Drive, Biddeford, ME 04005) where her legacy will bloom on.
