Gayle Arlys Hineline Durnbaugh died peacefully on January 1, 2026, in Scarborough, Maine, leaving many smiles and fond memories for those she left behind. She was 89 years old. She was born May 2, 1936 in Rice Lake, Wisconsin, to Marion Asher "Mic" Hineline and Edna Pearl "Eddie" Conklin Hineline.

Gayle came into this world with a cheerful demeanor and optimistic outlook. She was truly a vibrant spirit, known for a skip in her step and constant singing. A 1954 graduate of Bloom High School in Chicago Heights, Illinois, she attended Manchester University in North Manchester, Indiana, where she met her future husband while both were working on the school newspaper. Gayle's curiosity was satisfied by her voracious reading and lifelong learning. She earned a Master's of Arts degree in English from the University of Maine in 1970, a Master's of Education degree in Adult Education from the University of Southern Maine in 1984, and a Master's degree in Library and Information Science from the University of South Carolina in 1997.

Those who knew Gayle will likely remember her endless knitting as she took yarn and needles along wherever she went - in canoes while family members fished, at the UMaine men's hockey games where she and Jerry had season tickets, Blue Hill town meetings, and for hours as passenger in a car on her many road trips. Gayle's creativity was expressed in other crafts as well, most notably endless sewing projects from curtains to Christmas dresses for her first granddaughters, braided wool rugs, beautiful wedding quilts for her children and charming quilts for each grandchild, as well as endless scrapbooks. Gayle had a passion for beautiful fabrics, yarns and papers and was incredibly skilled at creating beautiful items, both for her home and to share with others.

She will also be remembered for her love of music. Proud of her perfect pitch, she could be found singing anywhere! But especially with her family, with her musician son Lindsey, and with her church choir. She also loved participating in community bands, most recently in the Bar Harbor and Brooklin Bands where she relished playing the bass drum. This was great fun for her children and grandchildren to watch.

Her competitive nature found an outlet with the Belfast Curling Club. It was Jerry's idea to give curling a try, but it was Gayle who excelled at the sport. She and Jerry had a blast attending the World Curling Championships in Scotland in 2000, and she was also very excited to serve as an usher at these same games in Massachusetts in 2006.

Gayle was a devoted Red Sox fan, thrilled when her family arranged a "party van" to Fenway Park to celebrate her 75th birthday.

Gayle and her husband Jerry co-founded and operated The Weekly Packet in 1960 with support from the Blue Hill community, an accomplishment of which she was truly proud. Gayle cheerfully traveled Blue Hill Peninsula and beyond to sell display ads and printing jobs for their fledgling business. She also wrote a weekly chatty Gayle Winds column for decades, which kept everyone abreast of local personal news. From recipes in this column, Gayle compiled the classic Gayle Winds Cookbook. Another accomplishment was her teaching career, primarily at George Stevens Academy, where she became acquainted with every 9th grade English student to pass through its doors for about 35 years. And after teaching, she was delighted to work part-time at the Blue Hill Public Library, often serving those same students and their families.

Gayle's mightiest legacy will be her family, the children she raised and the grandchildren she loved, her beloved nieces and nephews, and the children fostered through the years by her and Jerry.

Gayle was preceded in death by her husband Jerry Lindsey Durnbaugh, and by her parents Mic and Eddie Hineline.

Gayle is survived by her three children Jennifer (Kurt) Denlinger, Lindsey (Sara) Montana, and Andrea (Tim) Killiard, a special daughter Kong Nhes, and a foster son Arn Cheang; those who call her Grandma Gayle - Kira (Brian) Stroh, Soren Denlinger and Megan Hartnett, Renata, Larkin and Julia Denlinger, Parker Killiard, Kim (David) Doucette, Karina Nhes and Jonathan Aiello, and Chhan Bunnrith Nhes; and great-grandchildren Jayden Brooke, Camryn Pearl and Jack Brian Stroh, and Eliza Rose, Emily Iris, Ellia Arum and Edric Craig Doucette; her brother and sister-in-law Philip Neil Hineline and Catherine Almy Hineline; and her beloved companion Leonard Parrott, who shared many an adventure with Gayle, and gave her much joy.
