GEORGE A. GRUBER PASSED AWAY ON AUGUST 29, 2025.

George grew up in Pekin, Illinois, and graduated from Pekin High School in 1951.  He attended college for a year and then enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard where he was transferred to Portland, Maine in 1954. There he met his wife, Shirley, married,  and brought up two wonderful sons, Stephen and David. George was a wonderful husband and father with all the patience in the world, a very loving and gentle man.

George graduated from SMVTI,  So. Portland , Me. in 1957 and was hired by I.B.M. Corp.,  working as a service technician until he retired in 1988 after 30 years.  He then went to work for Kodak  for eight more years as a copier technician and permanently retired at the age of 63. George was an avid hunter and outdoorsman.  He was a dedicated member of the Scarborough Lions Club for 60 years, served as President and received the coveted Melvin Jones award.   He was the cook at all the suppers they put on to raise money for the Fire Dept., Boy Scouts and Historical Society.  He was  dedicated to serving the public from the Lions Club medical loan closet.  He was always available to go there to help anyone who needed equipment.  He was a member of the Black Point Congregational Church for over 60 years. In his retirement, he enjoyed buying and selling antiques with his wife, Shirley.

George traveled with Shirley to various countries in Europe especially Paris, France where he was one of ten men in  the U.S. sent there by IBM for six weeks.   Shirley accompanied him and they enjoyed visiting many countries. They also traveled extensively in the U. S. He enjoyed singing and the many afternoon concerts with  Shirley at the piano. George and his wife, Shirley were always together in whatever they did. He enjoyed being with his six grandchildren and ten  great grandchildren and was blessed to have had such a wonderful Family.

George is survived by his wife, Shirley, his two sons, Stephen and wife, Sherry of Forest, Virginia , David and wife, Lynn of Upton, Mass. six grandchildren, Christopher, Rebekah Smyth, Sarah Rives, Maxwell, Jefferson &  Mitchell and ten great grandchildren, Jackson and Ashton Gruber, Josiah,  Elsie,  Ambrose, Evander and Cora Smyth and Esther Rives, Emma and Grace Gruber. George  was preceded in death by his sister, Betty, his two brothers, John and Frederic and his parents, Lillian and Louis Gruber.

A graveside service will be held at Black Point Cemetery at 10a.m. on September 11,  2025.  A memorial service will be held privately at Sable Lodge. In lieu of flowers,  donations will be accepted  by the Scarborough Lions Club, P. O. Box 644, Scarborough, ME 04074.
