Obituary

Gertrude Quoddy Clifford, 88 years of age, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 8, 2025, at Scarborough Terrace surrounded by family and friends after a long illness.

Born on June 15, 1937, in St. Stevens, New Brunswick, Canada, Gertrude was the daughter of the late Theresa and Howard Brooks. She was one of five siblings, all of whom proceeded her death. She grew up in Steuben, Maine, where she attended school and, during breaks, helped her family harvest blueberries and cranberries, as well as dig clams along the coast.

In 1967, Gertrude married the late Herbert Bernard Clifford, and together raised 3 sons. She dedicated many years to the South Portland VFW Ladies Auxiliary, both as a Paige for her sister, Fran Booth, former National President of the Ladies Auxiliary, and later as President of the Maine VFW Ladies Auxiliary. A longtime member of St. Bartholomew's Perish of Cape Elizabeth, Gertrude lived her faith through service and the community.

She and Herbert shared a love for travel and boating, cherishing their trips to St. Martin and countless days aboard their beloved boat, the Jessica Lee. Gertrude found joy in spending time with her family and friends, tending to her gardens and plants, crocheting, playing cards, and enjoying her daily hot cup of tea while watching Fox News.

Gertrude was predeceased by her husband, Herbert Bernard Clifford, and her two sons: Robert Clifford and Michael Clifford. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Louise Clifford of Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Rangeley, Maine; 9 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

The Clifford family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to Scarborough Terrace, Compassus Scarborough Hospice and St. Bartholomew's for their exceptional care and support.
