SCARBOROUGH - Gregory J. Tolman, 64, passed away peacefully on July 5, 2024, surrounded by his family.

Greg was born on October 11, 1959, in Lewiston, Maine, to John B. and Jean L. Tolman. He grew up in Portland with his two brothers, Jed and Scott.

Greg attended Deering High School, where he was a standout football player and captain his senior year. He also excelled academically, graduating as the class valedictorian and being honored as the Maine State representative to the Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership Foundation where he met then-President Gerald Ford. He went on to earn his degree in Mathematics from Middlebury College, graduating with Magna Cum Laude honors and as a Phi Beta Kappa scholar.

Greg taught math at Noble and Greenough for two years and then went on to work at IBM for the next 40 years. He started out as a Systems Engineer and ended his career as a Retail Digital Consultant. He enjoyed the opportunity to travel across the United States and internationally in this role, often bringing his wife. He developed close personal and professional relationships with many coworkers over his 40 years and cherished these connections.

Greg married the love of his life, Kathleen Tolman, in 1989. Together, they raised four incredible children, Nick, Nate, Andrea, and Emily. Greg was extremely proud of his children and their accomplishments and openly welcomed their spouses and family into his life.

He was an involved coach for his kids' many sports and President of the Scarborough Soccer Club. He was proud of his commitment to his various community service roles, but most enjoyed his weekend road trips traveling for sports events with his kids. He has maintained close relationships with childhood and college friends and looked forward every year to his annual Cape Cod golf trips. He loved working in his yard, including vacuuming the acorns each fall, and kayaking in the Scarborough marsh.

Greg's legacy is one of courage, class, and dignity. He passed away from prostate cancer and faced it with humor, compassion, and love for family and friends. The Tolman family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the doctors and nurses at the New England Cancer Specialists, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and Hospice of Southern Maine for their compassionate care.

Greg is survived by his wife, Kathy; his children, Nicholas Tolman and his wife, Sarah Tolman, Nathanial Tolman and his wife, Brenda Iglesias, Andrea Sinnott and her husband Brendan Sinnott, and Emily Tolman and her partner, Kina Bramlette; his mother, Jean Tolman; his brothers, Scott and Jed Tolman; and his many beloved friends and family. He was preceded in death by his father, John Tolman.

Visiting hours will be held on July 11, 2024, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., with service and reception following at Hobbs Funeral Home, 671 U.S. Route 1, Scarborough, Maine 04074.
