Obituary

Helen L. Boyington, 93, of South Portland, passed away on Sunday, February 22nd, after a brief illness.

Born on June 2, 1932, Helen was raised in Portland and graduated from Portland High School in 1950. On June 28, 1952, she married the love of her life, Harlon Boyington. Together, they moved a few times during Harlon's military service before returning home to Maine, where they planted deep roots in South Portland and raised their six children.

Helen worked for years as a waitress at Deering Ice Cream and the Bridgeway Restaurant in South Portland. She later became a CNA and cared for residents at the South Portland Nursing Home before joining the office of Dr. John Lynch, DMD, where she worked until her retirement.

Family was the heart of Helen's world. She expressed her love through the things she created and shared—beautiful handmade afghans for her children, grandchildren, and great‑grandchildren; ceramic pieces that now hold a special place in many homes; and beloved family recipes such as fudge, hot fudge, baked beans, and lasagna. In her retirement, she found joy and comfort in the Hallmark Channel, which became one of her favorite pastimes.

Helen is survived by her daughters Beverly and her husband Donald, Cathy and her husband Donald, Linda, Robin, and Betty and her partner Greg; her son Harlon and his wife Kristen; and her sister‑in‑law Jo Ann and her husband Alan. She also leaves behind 12 grandchildren and 8 great‑grandchildren, all of whom brought her immense pride and happiness.

She was predeceased by her husband, Harlon (2016), and her son‑in‑law, Larry (2024). She was also predeceased by her siblings Emily Conway, Henry Lively, and Freda Sapp.

Visiting hour will be held at Hobb's Funeral Home in South Portland on Sunday, March 1st from 10-11 with the service immediately following at 11 a.m. A private burial for immediate family will be held at a later date.
