Obituary

Herbert "Herb" J. Hughes, 80, of Scarborough, passed away on June 16, 2024, at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough.  He was born in Houlton, Maine on September 24, 1943, son to the late Herbert O. Hughes and Ivy C. (Clark) Hughes.

Herb received his education through Scarborough High School and also SMVTI.  After schooling, he went on to lead a lengthy career serving both his community and State – focused mainly on public service.  Herb worked as a communications supervisor with the Maine State Police (retired), was in the Maine State Police reserves for 7 years, Scarborough Fire Department for 57 years (retired), Scarborough Police Department, Scarborough Rescue, Scarborough Fire Police and Public Works, as well as Suburban Propane (retired) and Penske Trucking (retired).  Herb was also a member of the First Congregational Church on Black Point Road in Scarborough.

Herb was an avid outdoorsman and could often be found exploring the State or in any number of his favorite hunting and fishing locations.  He was an animal lover, especially cats, dogs and horses.  He loved his family and never met a stranger.

He is survived by his daughter, Melissa Smith and her husband, Schyler of Kansas City, MI; his son, Kevin M. Hughes of Charlotte, NC; and his sister, Rebecca Bonenberger.  He was predeceased by his brothers, Rodney O. Hughes and Charles Clark, and his sister, Dorothy Harrington.

Visiting hours will be from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., Thursday, June 20, at Hobbs Funeral Home, 671 U.S. Route 1, Scarborough.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a memorial contribution in Herb's name are asked to consider the American Heart Association.
