James W. McLaughlin, known affectionately as Jim or Pop, passed away on July 18, 2024, in Scarborough, Maine, at the age of 80. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Jim lived a life highlighted by a rich tapestry of interests, accomplishments, and community service.

Born on September 21, 1943, in Bronxville, NY, to Jim and Barbara (Medcalfe) McLaughlin, he graduated from Georgetown University and Dartmouth's Tuck School ofBusiness.

He began his career at the American Distilling Company, where he became corporate secretary, and eventually transitioned to banking and financial services, helming several institutions and pioneering new banking models. His innovative approach and dedication left a lasting impact on the industry.

A veteran of the US Army, Jim served as a Captain from 1968 to 1971. His military journey took an unexpected turn when his deployment orders were changed from Vietnam to Korea, a twist of fate that occurred just months after meeting his future wife, Camilla Cornelsen, in New York City. They married in 1969, and, over a lifetime, called multiple places home, including New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, Utah and Maine.

Beyond his professional and military life, Jim was deeply passionate about music, mainly rock and roll. He had an in-depth knowledge of many of rock's pioneers and saw the most extraordinary multiple times. His diverse interests included sailing, skiing, coin collecting, and assembling intricate puzzles. Jim also loved animals with a lifetime menagerie, beginning with his boyhood dog, Tippy, and eventually extending to generations of retrievers. Most recently, he shared his home with two Australian Shepherds, a Maine Coon cat, and his cherished Shih Tzu, Mo.

He is survived by his wife, Camilla McLaughlin, three daughters — Mary Melissa McLaughlin, Abigail Anne McLaughlin Skelly (David Skelly), and Cathleen Camilla McLaughlin — and two grandchildren, Anders Reggie Skelly and Merrigan Anne Skelly. He is also survived by two brothers, John and Robert McLaughlin and a sister, Geraldine Bendel.

Jim's life will be celebrated at St. Maximillian Kolbe on August 2, 2024, at 11:00 AM. His legacy of generosity, dedication, and kindness will be remembered by all who knew him.
