James F. Shufeldt, 83, of South Portland, passed away April 26, 2026 after a period of declining health at Maine Medical Center. He was born December 11, 1942 in Lewiston Maine to Francis and Claire (Ross) Shufeldt.
Jim graduated in 1961 from Lewiston High School. That is where he met his future wife Pauline Fortin, and they began dating in college. They were married in June of 1965 and eventually settled in South Portland. They had 2 sons, Brian and Kevin.
He worked as a teacher for all his career. Starting at South Portland High School to Casco Bay College, and for many years as a culinary arts teacher at Southern Maine Community College.
For many years, Jim was involved in Southern Maine High School boys and girls track and field. He was a starter, corner judge, finish line judge, and the lead official for shot put event.
Jim enjoyed reading, boating, family outings, traveling and cooking. He also enjoyed spending summers at the beach with his granddaughters.
Jim was predeceased by his parents, his brother Stan and his wife Luana and their son Michael. He was also predeceased by his son Kevin.
Jim is survived by his wife Pauline of South Portland; son Brian Shufeldt and his wife Maura; granddaughters, Erika Dionne and her husband Keith, and Natalie Shufeldt all of Massachusetts; sister in law Lucy Tanner of Falmouth Maine; nephew James and his wife Beverly of Louisville Kentucky; grand nephews Matthew (Kentucky) and Jonathan (Oklahoma); and cousins John and Steve Tewhey of Maine.
Per his wishes, there will be no services. He will be laid to rest at Brooklawn Memorial Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Jim’s name can be made to "Trustees of Boston University" with "BU CTE Center" in the memo line.
