Obituary

Janice (Kelley) Alden passed peacefully surrounded by her family on Sunday, November 9, 2025.
Janice was born in Boston, Massachusetts on September 13, 1936, the eldest of two daughters to James and Sarah Kelley.  The family lived in Gorham and moved to South Portland.  She spent much of her formative years with visits from her large extended family from Southie.
She was a graduate of South Portland High School (1954) and Westbrook Junior College (1956).
She married Hayden Timothy Alden on February 9, 1963.

The couple settled in South Portland and raised two children, Kelley Alden of Scarborough Maine, James Alden of Franconia NH. She had one granddaughter Stephanie Gurney of Sarasota Florida, and one grandson Hayden Alden of Franconia NH.  She was pre-deceased by her husband in October 15th 1996.

Janice was a loving mother, wife, sister, grandmother ,aunt, daughter and friend.  The people who she surrounded herself truly had the gift of her presence.  She was bright, well read, opinionated, caring, funny and she took the time always to host dinners. She remembered birthdays and was always 20 minutes late.

What stood out most about her, was her love of her family and friends, and what will be missed most about her is how she held us all together as a family.

She leaves behind her daughter Kelley Alden (John Martin), her son James Alden (Lynn Beal), her sister Cynthia DiBiase, and her beloved grandchildren Stephanie Gurney and Hayden Alden. She also leaves her three nieces, ten grand nieces, nephews,,cousins and her friends and neighbors. Though she has left us, she leaves us with memories, traditions and a love she instilled in all of us.

Visitation will be held from 4:00pm-7:00pm on Wednesday, November 19, 2025 at Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland.  A burial will follow in the spring.
