Jason Elvin Leyro, age 54, of Scarborough, Maine, passed away unexpectedly but peacefully in his home on November 1, 2026. Jason was born at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City on June 15, 1972, to Maria and Elvin Leyro. The eldest of his siblings, he was raised in the Bronx, New York, until 1980, when his parents relocated to Bangor, Maine.
In Bangor, he attended St. Mary's Catholic School before continuing his education in the Hampden school system, attending Weatherbee Middle School and graduating with the Hampden Academy class of 1990. Following graduation, he briefly attended UMaine, Presque Isle, where he played basketball, before relocating to Florida in pursuit of sunnier skies and warmer weather.
Despite his best efforts to convince family to make the move to Florida, Jason ultimately gave in to the lure of New England and, more importantly, the desire to be closer to those he cherished most. In 2017, he returned, settling in southern Maine.
Although he never had his own children, Jason fully embraced his role as big brother, uncle, and, more recently, bonus dad. His genuine interest, patience, kindness, outgoing nature, and joie de vivre were best in class. He was truly adored by family and friends alike.
Professionally, Jason found his calling with JM&A, where he excelled as a Dealer Performance Manager for the past decade. Jason was the ultimate maximizer, making the most of every precious moment nurturing his hobbies and, above all, spending time with family and friends. Some of his best memories were made travelling abroad with family; enjoying annual JM&A vacations with his partner, Laura Baer, and her children, Elise and James, whom he cherished; boating in Casco Bay during the summer; and hitting the links with his dad, brother, and, most recently, his mom.
With his easygoing spirit and appreciation of life's simple pleasures, Jason had a quality about him that was a reminder not to take life too seriously. He enjoyed charcuterie, oysters, reggae music, and, most of all, the company of the people he loved.
Jason was taken too soon and will continue to be deeply mourned and celebrated by his parents, Elvin and Maria Leyro; his brother Brandon Leyro and sister-in-law Jessie Cmaylo; his sister Teresa Leyro and brother-in-law Sandro Colacicco; as well as his nephews, Benicio and Wesley Leyro, and nieces, Kaia and Jordan Colacicco.
Jason was a central figure to his large Puerto Rican family, including his godparents, Titi Gladys and Uncle Ralph; his Titis, Nellie, Beryl, and Noeli; and his Uncle Pie, with whom he shared the most special bond. And we would be remiss not to mention the cousins with whom he shared his life and to whom he was considered a brother, including Linda (Antonio), Kimberly Ann, Christopher, Michelle, Rizalina, and Idalis. He is predeceased by his grandparents, his dear Uncle Verne (Nellie), and Titi Elvie, who we know have welcomed him in heaven. Fly away home.
Visiting Hours will be held on Saturday, November 14, 2026, from 2:00p.m. to 3:30p.m. at Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland. A reception will follow next door at the Elizabeth Hobbs Hospitality Center from 3:30p.m. to 5:00p.m.
