John Paul Hyland, 92, of South Portland Maine, formerly Elmira, NY, passed away peacefully in his home on August 16, 2026. 

John was born in Chateaugay, NY the son of the late Loretta & Gerald Hyland. He attended Chateaugay High School and graduated from SUNY University at Albany Business School. He enlisted in the Army and served nearly two years in Ft. Knox, KY then in the reserves until honorably discharged in 1961. He married Ellen Marie O’Brien, of Brasher Falls, NY at St. Patrick’s Church in Brasher Falls on July 1, 1961.

John worked in Massena NY and moved to Elmira NY in 1966 to be President of Elmira Business Institute, where he worked for 22 years and was active in the accreditation of private business schools. He was a member of the Hibernians, a 25 year member of Kiwanis and a lifetime member of Fur, Fin & Feathers in Lowman, NY where he enjoyed skeet and trap shooting. In 2017, he and Ellen relocated to South Portland, ME. A veteran of the US Armed Forces, he was a member and fellow Legionnaire at the American Legion, Stewart P. Morrill Post #35.

John is predeceased by his loving wife Ellen and is survived by three daughters, Kathy of Virginia Beach, VA, Martha of Pennfield, NY and Sara of South Portland, ME, two granddaughters Brittany and Ella and a grandson Ben, two great grandsons, one sister Geraldine Wetzell and her husband Rolf, of VT, along with many nieces and nephews. 

He was predeceased by two sisters LoisAnn Brooks and Rose Mary Hyland Coons.

 He will be laid to rest in the Hyland family plot at St. Patrick’s cemetery in Chateaugay, NY.
