John R. Maroon, 94, of Scarborough, ME, passed away peacefully on April 27 ^th , 2023. John was born in Waterville on October 6, 1928, to the late Sam and Nimera Maroon. He was predeceased by his wife, Norma Maroon, his brothers Ernest, Charles, Peter, and Louis, and his sisters Freda and Lucille. He and his seven siblings were raised by first generation Americans and grew up in a strong community of Lebanese people. They were proud of their Lebanese heritage and raised their families with the strong values and ethics of their culture.

John was a loving husband, father, and Jidu (grandfather). In his early life, John proudly served in combat near the 38 ^th parallel as an Army Sergeant in the Korean War from 1950-1952. After returning home, he worked for Kirschner Meats for many years and then continued his career with Jordan Meats in the mid 70's. He was known for his strong work ethic and his devotion to his family. He was proud of the years he spent in the workforce, and he was also proud of the family he and Norma built together.

John and Norma built a camp on China Lake, which served as the central meeting place for many of their family and friends. They were always willing to open up their home and share a meal with others. They placed a high importance on sharing what they had, and they showed that in the way they lived their lives.

After his retirement, John and Norma spent many enjoyable years as "snow birds" in North Fort Myers, Florida. John was active in his community and enjoyed shuffleboard, golf, and card games with his friends and family. During his summers in Scarborough, John spent many nights playing cribbage with his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed playing bridge with his friends. He was an active member of the Scarborough Lions Club and a member of the Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by his two sons: Mark and his wife Terry, and David and his partner Karen Mokarzel; his grandchildren Tyler Maroon (and McKenzie Close), Zachary (and Pam) Maroon, and Rachel (and Giovanni) Mazzone; his brother Paul Maroon and his loving cousin Fefa Deeb; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 13, 2023 at 11 a.m. at Hobbs Funeral Home, 671 U.S. Route 1 in Scarborough with a reception to follow.
