J.D Schnackenberg, 72, of South Portland, Maine, passed away peacefully on April 8, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, faith, and dedication to family.

J.D was born on July 25, 1953, in Wichita, Kansas, to John Schnackenberg and Wilma Jean (Maninger) Schnackenberg. He was preceded in death by his loving parents and his sister, Jana Hirschman (Schnackenberg).

He is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Janice Elaine Schnackenberg (Peden), his high school sweetheart. Together, they built a life rooted in love, faith, and shared adventure. He also leaves behind his devoted son, Jon Michael Schnackenberg and daughter-in-law Kaitlyn Theresa Schnackenberg, and his cherished grandchildren: Hadley Grace Schnackenberg; Jon Riley Schnackenberg; Braeden Patrick Schnackenberg; Bennett Michael Schnackenberg; and Carter Henry Schnackenberg. He is further survived by his sisters, Kathy Aldridge (Schnackenberg) and Angie Cloud (Schnackenberg).

In 1987, J.D and Janice moved to South Portland, Maine, beginning a new chapter that would span decades and create a lifetime of memories. J.D built a distinguished career as an accomplished architect and project manager. He contributed his talents to Portland Design Team and later enjoyed a successful career with L.L. Bean before retiring. In retirement, J.D developed a heart and passion for discipling men into a life of freedom and purpose in Christ through the Transformation Project’s ministry. He was honored to serve as Board Chair and deeply valued all the relationships that were built through this meaningful work.

J.D will be remembered most for the way he loved others. He was a devoted husband, a proud father, and a deeply cherished “Grampy.” His gentle spirit, kind heart, and remarkable sense of humor left a lasting impression on everyone he met. His grandchildren were the joy of his life, and he treasured the time he spent with them each week.

A man of deep and abiding faith, J.D was a fervent follower of Jesus Christ. His faith guided him in living a purpose-driven life marked by compassion, humility, and service to others.

In retirement, J.D found great happiness in traveling and spending time with his family, creating memories that will be treasured for generations.

J.D’s life was a testament to love and devotion. The impact of his steadfast faith and loving guidance will reverberate for generations to come. J.D will be profoundly missed and forever remembered and celebrated by all who knew and loved him.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11am on Friday, April 17th at Eastpoint Christian Church 345 Clark’s Pond Parkway, South Portland, ME 04106 with reception to follow. Burial will follow at 2pm in Evergreen Cemetery 672 Stevens Ave, Portland, ME 04103.
