Obituary

Kenneth "Ken" Elmer Hawkes, 94, of Portland (resident of Warwick Street for over 65 years), passed away at Gosnell Hospice House on May 21, 2024. He was born in Portland, Maine on February 22, 1930, son to the late Merton and Isabelle (Whaff) Hawkes.

Ken graduated from Deering High School; Class of 1948, served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean war and was a carpenter for the majority of his working career. He worked for Robert Walker Cumberland Carpentry, Beals Furniture and even delivered flowers for Harmon's & Barton's Florist for 15 years.

Taking a chance on a blind date one day led to meeting the love of his life, Mary Avery. They were married in 1952 and built a life together focusing on their 3 children, endless love, and sense of adventure. In their later years, they went on a cross country drive simply to visit many of his navy buddies. Their love story consisted of 48 loving and devoted years cut short due only to her passing in 2000.

He was a life member of the V.F.W, AARP and had a passion for high pin bowling and softball; having an 814 batting average – a stat and enthusiasm he shared with his granddaughter.

Ken is survived by his loving children, William M. Hawkes, Sandy M. Maines (husband Chris), and Kenneth E. Hawkes Jr (wife Vicki); his grandchildren, Chrissy Moore (husband Mike), Joseph Maines (fiancée Amanda Waterman), Billy Hawkes Jr (husband Mark) his great-grandchildren, Ambrosia, Dawson, Jacoby and Larissa
