Obituary

Madelyn Joyce Hall Mitchell, 93, passed away surrounded by family on October 14, 2025 at her home in Gorham. Born Downeast in Milbridge, Maine on May 16, 1932, Madelyn was the 13th of 14 children of Judith Sprague and Orrin Otis Hall.

She was predeceased by her husband of 75 years, Raymond Vaughn Mitchell, Jr.; her parents, Judy and Orrin; her siblings, Lawrence, Helen, George Leverett, Nancy, James, Natalie, John, Irene, Orrin, Althea, Mary, and George Sawyer; and her granddaughter, Allison Libby Ishihara.

Madelyn was a lifelong Mainer, leaving Milbridge at age 9 for Old Orchard Beach, Portland, and finally settling in South Portland, where she attended high school and met her husband, Raymond. Madelyn and Bumps were married on August 12, 1950, and went on to have five children. She was a homemaker, with occasional stints working in a local candy shop, until she went to work fulltime for Fairchild Semiconductor, followed by twenty years working as a proof operator for Casco Bank.

Never one to sit still for long, Madelyn spent her time doing the things she loved–she was a master genealogist and worked tirelessly on her family history. She loved the outdoors and camping, and was often the first one up and outside during the warm seasons to tend to her yard and beautiful gardens. Well-known for her delicious desserts, Madelyn was also a gifted candy-maker and baker. She was an avid reader, and read any and all books she could find, especially the scriptures.

A woman of unwavering faith, Madelyn was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and served valiantly in many roles. In her senior years, she and Bumps served as missionaries for the church in the Boston, Massachusetts LDS Temple.

She was an adored aunt, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her nieces, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren have treasured memories of playing games, working together outside, camping, cooking, and reading together.

Madelyn is survived by her sister, Phyllis Mae Hall Butler (Brad) of Allenstown, NH; her five children, Nancy Lee Mitchell Albertsen (Mark) of Bountiful, UT, Leonard Edward Mitchell (Deborah) of Taylor, TX, Heidi Rae Mitchell Pratt (Scott) of Gorham, Rebecca Jane Mitchell Billin (Michael) of Meredith, NH, and Michael Clark Mitchell (Jennifer) of Gorham; as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services to celebrate Madelyn's life will be held on October 24, 2025 at 11:00am at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 755 River Road, in Windham.
