Margery W.
Nickerson
May 20, 1926 — Dec 18, 2022
Scarborough
Margery W. Nickerson of Scarborough, Maine, died December 18, 2022, at Piper Shores, where she was a resident for more than 20 years. She was born May 20, 1926, in Lowell, MA, the youngest of four children of Frederick and Gertrude (Cluff) Garland. She attended high school at Northfield Seminary in Northfield, MA, and graduated from Simmons College, Class of 1948.
From 1948 -1949 she worked in Greenfield, MA, for the Franklin County Extension Service as an Associate 4H Agent. Then, for the following two years, she worked in Concord, NH, as a Home Demonstration Agent for the Merrimack County Extension Service.
Margery was a member of the First Congregational Church of Pelham, NH, where she met her husband, Albert, in the choir. They were married on August 4, 1951.
She was active in the Pelham community and strongly advocated for others. She was honored to receive the 1st Annual Outstanding Citizen Award presented by the Pelham Lions Club in 1969 for her community service. Her community involvement over the years included The League of Women Voters, Chairman of the Recreation Commission, President of the PTA, a Girl Scout leader, a volunteer on the Girl Scout Council and the Girl Scout Friends of Runels organization, and a member of the Building Committee for the Pelham Memorial School.
She was a Hostess with Welcome Wagon for several years. She met many new residents, introduced them to the community, and helped them feel "welcome" in Pelham.
At the farm in Pelham, where Margery and Albert brought up their family, we enjoyed many large family gatherings, especially at Thanksgiving, Christmas, and other special occasions. The farm was a special place filled with numerous memories for all of us.
Margery was a dedicated caregiver to many in our family, in their elder years and for those with health concerns.
When she moved to Piper Shores in Scarborough, Maine, in 2001, she enjoyed visits from family and friends. She would take them on adventures in the area (planning them out in advance) or encourage them to enjoy the beautiful Piper Shores facility. She made many friends in her new community that she loved. She was considered one of Piper Shores Pioneers.
Margery was loved by her family and is survived by her brother Newton Garland and his partner Nancy, son Mark Nickerson, daughter Ann Cady and her husband Tim, her grandsons Eric Cady and his wife Jenny, Paul Cady and his husband Rubens, and granddaughter Emily Cady, great-grandson Joshua Cady, and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and relatives. Margery was predeceased by her husband, Albert M. Nickerson, and her son Albert M. Nickerson, Jr.
A graveside service will be held at the Gibson Cemetery, Pelham, NH, in the Spring. Please consider a random act of kindness in her memory.
