Marguerite “Peggy” Ann D’Amico Thurlow passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 20, 2026, with her family at her side, days shy of her 90th birthday.

Peggy was born in Portland, Maine, the daughter of Michael A. and Christine Millett D’Amico. She grew up in West Scarborough and graduated with honors from Scarborough High School in 1955. Music was an important part of her life from the beginning; she sang in school groups, attended music festivals and was named “Most Musical” by her classmates.

In elementary school Peggy met the love of her life, Bruce Thurlow. They dated through high school, were named King and Queen of the annual Confetti Ball and married in 1959. Their close and devoted marriage would last nearly 63 years.

Just six months after their wedding, Peggy’s father, Michael A. D’Amico, was killed in a racing accident at Oxford Plains Speedway at age 43. Peggy had just turned 23 and was nearly five months pregnant with their first child, Bruce Michael. Even while grieving, she helped her widowed mother care for four younger siblings.

Peggy and Bruce raised three sons, Michael, John and Jeffrey. When Bruce pursued graduate studies at the University of Maine, the family moved to Orono, where Peggy worked as a university typist and helped support the family while Bruce earned his master’s degree and doctorate. Their sons grew up with family trips and countless days at Pine Point—working in the family business, lobstering, clamming, fishing and enjoying a large extended family.

Peggy loved music, roses, books, jigsaw puzzles, crossword puzzles, Italian cooking, and twice weekly visits and Scrabble games with her siblings. She was an excellent pianist and an award-winning ballroom dancer. Dancing became one of the great joys she and Bruce shared, and they eventually opened a small studio of their own.

Together, Peggy and Bruce also established the Southern Maine Learning Center Day School for children who struggled in traditional school settings. Bruce administered the school while Peggy kept the books and helped manage the office.

Family remained at the center of Peggy’s life. She adored her five grandsons—Michael Brian, Daniel, Ryan, Benjamin and Andrew—and later became great-grandmother to Aurora Rose, Freya Lynn, whose nine brief days of life in January 2023 were deeply cherished, and Reyna Belle.

Peggy was predeceased by her husband Bruce, her parents, her brother Chief Warrant Officer Joseph D’Amico, several beloved nieces and nephews, and great-granddaughter Freya Lynn.

Peggy is survived by her sons B. Michael Thurlow and his wife Malvina, Jeffrey Thurlow and his partner Jennifer Anderson, and John Thurlow; her sisters Donna Valente and husband Robert, Ann Marie Libby and husband Norman; her brother Michael “Mickey” D’Amico and his partner Sue Foss; sister-in-law Emma Gochi Thurlow; her special “adopted” daughter Chris Hillman; extended family; and dear lifelong friends Dale Doucette and Mary Marzilli. Peggy also remained especially fond of Linda Callahan Thurlow and Susan Callahan Thurlow, the mothers of her grandsons.

Visiting hours will be Friday, September 25th from 8:30-10:30 at Hobbs Funeral Home, 671 U. S. Route 1, Scarborough, ME followed by a mass of Christian burial at 11:00 at St. Margaret’s Church, 6 Saco Ave., Old Orchard Beach.
