Martha Ann Gorman
1934-2025
PORTLAND--Martha Ann Gorman, 90, of Portland, ME, passed away in her home on March 27, 2025, with her daughter at her side. Martha was born on December 26, 1934, in Mayfield, PA. She grew up in Jermyn and Archibald, PA. In 1953, she moved with her family to Johnson City, NY.
Martha married Eugene (Gene) Gorman on August 4,1956, in St. James Church in Johnson City, NY. They honeymooned in Lake George, NY and lived in (or near) Binghamton and Afton, NY for almost 40 years.
They moved to South Portland, ME in 1995 to help raise their three grandchildren. Taking care of "her three boys" was the happiest time of Martha's life. She played board games, attended school events, went on family vacations, gave them too many presents at Christmas, and too much candy on Easter. She had a rough childhood and felt the need to overdo the holidays. She enjoyed living near the ocean -- walking on the beach, stopping for ice cream at Kettle Cove, and eating out at Lobster Shack.
Martha was the last surviving family member of her generation. She was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Gene Gorman; her mom, Alice Carey Williams; sisters Alice Marie Schemel, Edna Fresquez, and Beverly D'Agostino; friends from Betsy Ross House and 75 State Street, where she lived for the last 12 years, and family members, including her brother-in-law Jack Gorman and his wife Marge Gorman. She was also predeceased by her beloved grandson Conor Beck. She is survived by her daughter Denise Beck, son-in-law Matt Beck, grandsons Evan and Jackson Beck; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation will be from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm with a Celebration of Life at 12:00 pm on April 12, 2025, at Hobbs Funeral Home, South Portland, ME. A burial at nearby Mt. Pleasant Cemetery will take place after the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to 75 State Street, Hospice of Southern Maine, and Family Restored.
