Mary A.
Mahoney
May 9, 1930 — Nov 27, 2025
Mary Anne (Mills) Mahoney, of Cape Elizabeth, Maine passed away peacefully on November 27, 2025, at the age of 95. Born in 1930, Mary grew up in South Portland, one of seven children of James and Diana (Tanguay) Mills. She graduated from South Portland High School in 1948, where she illustrated her yearbook and earned a scholarship to the Maine College of Art. Although she did not pursue art professionally, she remained creative throughout her life, often sending notes to family and friends featuring her original drawings.
On June 4, 1953, she married the love of her life, Ralph P. Mahoney Jr. They welcomed son Ralph III in 1955 and daughter Anne in 1957. The family moved to Beloit, Wisconsin for Ralph's work and welcomed daughter Jane in 1964. They returned to Maine in 1969 and settled in Cape Elizabeth, where Mary lived for the remainder of her life.
Mary loved golfing and was a member of Purpoodock Club for more than 40 years. She and Ralph had a wonderful group of friends there and enjoyed many fun days on the course and evenings dining and dancing. One of her fond memories from Purpoodock was meeting Arnold Palmer when he visited for a tournament. Mary was also an avid bridge player and devoted student of the game. She believed bridge kept her mind sharp and continued playing until she became ill. If anyone had a question about rules, Mary was the one to ask. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she learned to use an iPad just so she could play online.
Mary loved watching the birds outside her window and could identify nearly every species that visited. She maintained a long-running and often humorous feud with the squirrels that tried to steal from her bird feeder, always looking for new ways to outsmart them.
Mary was predeceased by her beloved husband Ralph in 1974. Though their time together was far too short, they filled their years with more fun, travel and adventure than many experience in a lifetime. She was also predeceased by her siblings Arthur, Lloyd, Donald, James and Helen. She is survived by her brother, Charlie; son, Ralph and his wife, Vickie; daughter, Anne Lano and her husband, Michael, their son, Jack and his wife, Sara; and daughter, Jane O'Halloran and her husband, Dan, and their children, Charlie and Olivia.
In keeping with Mary's wishes, services will be private. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in her honor to LifeFlight of Maine ( https://lifeflightmaine.org ). And remember what Mary always said to her kids when they went out…A.B.K.A.G. (Always Be Kind and Good).
