WESTBROOK - Michael Dana Worden, 84, passed away peacefully Tuesday evening, October 20, 2026. Mike was born in Jay, Maine, and lived in Canton Point and Wilton throughout his childhood. He graduated from Wilton Academy and served in the Army at Fort Belvoir in Virginia, after graduating from SMVTI with an Associates Degree. He married Betty Lou Mosher, also from Wilton, in 1967, and they moved to Cape Elizabeth, Maine, where they raised their family and were married for 50 years. During that time, Mike was Food Service Manager for the Correctional Center in South Windham and went on to found the Prison Industries Program there.
Mike was the definition of a social butterfly, commenting after a recent high school reunion, “I talked with every person there!” He was known for being a good dancer (Wilton Academy’s 1961 “Jitterbug King”), and for his wide smile and deep summer tan. Mike was happy to coordinate church suppers, and in doing so he made a number of cherished, lifelong friends. He loved spending time as a ride-along bird-hunter with his brother, Jon, who was his best friend. Mike was a runner, camper, fisherman, and hiker. He was happiest when traveling around the country by motor home with Betty, reaching Branson, Key West, Campobello Island, and the Grand Canyon, among other destinations.
Mike took great pride in watching his grandsons, Harry and Sully, thrive. Grampy towed them around the Cape in a bicycle trailer, and they toasted marshmallows at Lily Bay State Park. A trip to Grammy and Grampy’s often included walks to the pond, sorting change, “new” bikes, and peanutbutter-and-Fluff sandwiches. Mike and Betty enjoyed sitting on bleachers and sidelines for soccer, basketball, baseball, and ultimate frisbee.
Mike dedicated many years of his life to caring for Betty, who was diagnosed at 47 with Parkinson’s disease, until she passed away in 2017. While it took its toll, that profound act of devotion is forever revered in the hearts of our family.
Michael was predeceased by his parents, Homer and Velda Worden, and he is survived by his brother Jon (Diane) Worden, sister Sue (Jim) Gurney, sister Betsy Bransky, daughters Kristi (Tim) Worden and Dena (Doug) McFarland, and grandsons Harrison Worden McFarland and Sullivan Michael McFarland.
Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, October 28, 4:00-6:00 p.m. at Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road in South Portland, Maine.
