Nancy Jean Leverett

August 10, 1937 – December 21, 2023

On December 21, 2023, Jean Leverett, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend passed away at the age of 86.

Jean was born in Atlanta, Georgia in 1937 to Edward Alton Leverett and Sarah Frances (Simpson) Leverett. She was the oldest daughter in the family. She was extremely close to her younger sister, Patsy Memler, during their childhood and when raising their children in neighboring communities. Jean and Patsy talked daily for many years. Conversations exceeding two hours were normal. She was also close to her sister in-law, Mary Nell Blasingame, who also shares her conversational skills.

Jean absolutely adored her mother and shared many of her traits, unwittingly funny, never shied from a conversation, enthusiastic, and organizationally challenged. Jean and her mother both believed they were direct descendants of French royalty.

Jean would credit the family's athletic speed to their French lineage. Leverett is a girl's name of French origin meaning young hare, and Jean associated a hare with speed and agility. In her elder years, Jean would exhibit Leverett agility with a high leg kick. Jean further exhibited her Francophile passions through her love for Kir Royales.

Jean earned her psychology degree from the University of Georgia.  She claimed to have danced with Fran Tarkenton while attending Georgia. After college, Jean secured her dream job at Delta Airlines. She loved working at Delta and would often share stories about her job and trips.

Jean married Vaughn Moore who worked for Delta and Air France. Her love for Air France was close to her esteem for Delta Airlines. Vaughn and Jean traveled to Europe and Egypt. Work commitments would take them to Dallas to live for a brief period. Jean did mess with Texas and was happy to return to Georgia. Jean was Atlanta's biggest fan. Unsurprisingly, her favorite drink was Coca-Cola.

Jean and Vaughn had two boys, Marc and Michael. Vaughn passed away when the boys were young. Jean would raise two boys on her own and did a remarkable job. Jeans's primary interest was the boys. She held down a full-time job and never missed a sporting or school event. Jean's assumption was that any location in Atlanta was only a fifteen-minute ride from her home. The boys learned the importance of flexibility and creative explanations.  Jean thoroughly enjoyed her working mother status. She was also an avid Democrat and happy to debate many of the issues close to her heart.

She dabbled in hobbies, many short lived. Her hobbies included antique shopping, furniture rearranging, collecting blue and white vases, synchronized swimming and square dancing.  Blue was her color. She would often tell you that you looked best in blue.

One hobby that did last was a love for television and movies. Show favorites were The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Andy Griffith Show and One Day at a Time. She had an encyclopedic knowledge of cinema and television. Her life changed forever when Turner Class Movies launched as a channel. With the ability to save shows, Jean was one of the early bingers of television and movies.

Jean would continue to work throughout her adult life in Atlanta. Her last job, American Health Consultants, was one of her favorites at. She made meaningful and lasting friendships.

Sadly, her eldest son Marc passed away unexpectedly. She moved to Cape Cod, Massachusetts to be closer to family. Ultimately, she settled in Maine to spend time with her three grandchildren. Jean loved her daughter in-law, Gwen, and thoroughly enjoyed trips, dinners and outings with her son, daughter in-law and grandchildren. She lived at Oceanview in Falmouth, Maine for fifteen years and thoroughly enjoyed her time.

Jean leaves behind her son, Michael Moore, daughter in-law, Gwen Moore, grandchildren, Juliet Leverett Moore, Henry Marc Moore, and Willa Janette Moore, niece, Julie Memler and her family, sister in-laws, Mary Nell Blasingame and her husband, Mike Blasingame, and Toni McLaughlin Moore and their families. Jean was predeceased by two brother in-laws, Tom Moore and Bob Memler.

Thank you to the staff, nurses and doctors at Oceanview at Falmouth, the Landing at Cape Elizabeth, Cape Memory Care and Pinnacle at South Portland for helping a wonderful lady age with peace and dignity.

There will be a memorial service in Georgia next spring for Jean.
