Peter Alan Webber passed away Sunday, July 17, 2022, in Venice Florida, following a lengthy period of declining health. He died peacefully with his wife of 58 years, Lorraine Leighton Webber holding his hand.

Born in Portland, in 1933, Peter grew up in the Willard Beach neighborhood of South Portland. He was often seen at the beach, playing neighborhood basketball, even chasing cable cars! He graduated from South Portland High school in 1952, having played on the state championship football team. After high school, he served in the US Army then, in 1959, graduated from the University of Maine in Orono with a degree in agricultural engineering. Peter taught at SMVTI (now Southern Maine Community College) for 29 years, teaching mathematics and land surveying. He started the intramural sports program at the school and was active in early school athletics. Peter was also active in Scarborough community athletics, coaching Little League Baseball and Pee Wee Soccer.

After retiring from teaching, he had his own business, Peter Webber Land Surveying, for several years. During this time he employed his children as his survey crew which saw a lot of amusing stories. When Peter and his wife Lorraine retired in 1999, they enjoyed traveling to most of the United States, Germany, England, Ireland and Scotland. They then retired, spending winters in Venice FL, where he was known as the Mayor, greeting all who he met; and summers "Upta Camp" on Woods Pond in Bridgton Maine, the family gathering place where he taught Cribbage to grandchildren and their guests.

Peter was predeceased by his parents, Eben and Naomi (née Bickford) Webber and his brother Bickford Webber.

Peter is survived by his wife of 58 Years, Lorraine Leighton, his sons Paul, and Mark, and daughter Katherine, his daughter-in-law, Ellen, and "Papa Pete" to his grandchildren, Kaitlin, Matthew (Michelle), and Evan (Taylor); and Ethan, Max and their mother Sharie. He was excited to welcome great-grandchildren, Matthew Jr. and Rose. He was also survived by his brother Walter (Libby), his sister-in-law Margaret Leighton, and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. – 1:30 p.m., Friday, August 19, 2022 at Hobbs Funeral Home, South Portland followed by a Celebration of Life at 1:30 p.m.    A graveside service is scheduled for 3:00 at Riverside Cemetery in Cape Elizabeth followed by a reception at the Elizabeth Hobbs Hospitality Center at Hobbs Funeral Home.
