Obituary

Scarborough - Phillip A. Hersey, 74, of Scarborough, passed away after a long illness on January 17, 2024 at the Barron Center in Portland.

Born on August 15, 1949, in Portland, he was the son of Donald and Helen (Brim) Hersey.

Phil graduated from Scarborough High School in 1968 and from SMTC in 1970. Phil went to work at Herman's Shoe as warehouse manager for several years, he worked with Peter McConnell selling cars for many years, and retired from Budget Rent A Car at the jetport, and his final and favorite job was tending the Fourth Turn Bar at Beech Ridge Speedway with Robbie and Patty.

Phil met the love of his life, Donna Rice and they married in 1979. They had many wonderful years together with never a cross word between them. Soon after they welcomed a daughter, Katie.  Phil and Donna like to take rides and see the beautiful state they lived in along with trips to Florida, Kentucky and Nashville.

Phil grew up not far from Beech Ridge Speedway, in his youth he would attend races with his family and friends.  In his young adult years he beginning working on the pit crew of drivers at Beech Ridge Speedway .  He was with the Dick McCabe 0 for many years making many lifelong friends. In the 1970's he had his own race car, number 55.

His friends were always there to help with the car, Dennis, Mike, Danny, Wardie and his Dad.

After giving up driving, he was  content in the pits helping where he could.

He traveled to many race tracks throughout New England, Kentucky and Daytona for many years and had reserved tickets for Daytona, year after year. His racing buddies were his cousin, Danny, friends, Robbie, Carl and Bob, along with many others.

He was predeceased by the mother and father, his aunts and uncles, and his friend, Robbie. He is survived by his wife, Donna, daughter, Katie and husband, Hawk, grandchildren, Kaelyn , Ethan and Veronica.  He is also survived by his sister, Donna, her husband, John and his two nephews and their families, Derek and Darren Phinney as well as his special friend, Dennis.

Visiting hours will be from 2-4 PM on January 26, 2024 at the Hobbs Funeral Home on Route 1 in Scarborough, Maine. It will be a gathering and Celebration of Phil's life.

In lieu of flowers donations in Phil's name may be made to Maine Vintage Race Car Assoc. 24 Sokokis Road  Biddeford, Maine  04005
