Rebecca Mae Silver passed away peacefully on December 31, 2025, after a life defined by service, resilience, compassion, and deep devotion to her family and community.

Born on August 3, 1944, Rebecca was raised with strong New England roots and remained deeply connected to Maine throughout her life. She later made her longtime home in Scarborough, where she became widely known and respected for her dedication to helping others and her unwavering strength.

Rebecca proudly served for many years with the Scarborough Fire Department, where she earned the rank of Rescue Captain. Her years in emergency services reflected the fearless, caring, and dependable spirit that became her hallmark. She was deeply respected by fellow firefighters, first responders, friends, and community members whose lives she touched through her service and compassion.

Her connection to Scarborough’s close-knit public safety and Beech Ridge communities remained an important part of her life for decades. In addition to her years in emergency response, Rebecca also devoted time to caregiving and helping others in need. Whether through professional caregiving, friendship, or simple acts of kindness, she had a natural ability to comfort and support people during difficult times.

Rebecca was predeceased by her husband, John S. Silver, whom she married on November 17, 1979. John served as a Scarborough police officer before continuing his career in public safety and security work. Together they shared a life grounded in family, public service, and community involvement.

She was also predeceased by her children, Kevin Wayne Gelinas and Michelle Gelinas Hill, both of whom remained deeply loved throughout her life. Despite profound loss, Rebecca continued to face life with strength, humor, determination, and deep love for those around her.

Rebecca was the daughter of Virginia C. Thomas of Tamworth, New Hampshire, whose values of resilience, loyalty, and caring for others clearly shaped Rebecca throughout her life.

She leaves behind her beloved grandchildren, Jonathan L. Pellerin, Cortney Gelinas, Kevin James Gelinas, Cameron Tetreault, William Tetreault, and Chandler Smith; along with great-grandchildren, extended members of her family, and many lifelong friends whose lives were forever touched by her strength, humor, generosity, and loyalty.

Rebecca will be remembered for her quick wit, strong personality, generous heart, and fierce devotion to the people she loved. She treasured family gatherings, lifelong friendships, conversations over coffee, and the many memories built throughout the Scarborough community over the years.

A service to celebrate Rebecca’s life will be held on Thursday, May 14, 2026, at Hobbs Funeral Home, 671 RT 1 Scarborough. Family and friends are invited to gather from 9:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., with a memorial service immediately following from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Burial will take place at 1pm at Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Augusta.

Rebecca’s legacy lives on through the countless people she helped, comforted, protected, and loved throughout her remarkable life.
