Richard "Dick" James Dalphin

Dick, age 92, of Scarborough Maine, passed away peacefully at Gosnell Hospice. He was born the son of Robert and Beatrice (nee Ashforth) Dalphin. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on May 20, 1931, he graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School. He then went on to Clarkson University obtaining a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering. He followed this with a master's degree in Automotive Engineering at Chrysler Institute and a master's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. In 1983, Dick received a Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut in Environmental Engineering.

Dick lived in many places, some of which include Brooklyn, NY, Potsdam, NY, Detroit, MI, Hartford, CT (and surrounding areas), Bhubaneshwar, India, and Brunswick, Maine.

In 1953, Dick spent two years in the Army Ordnance Corp where his duties included leading instructional teams to teach maintenance and repair of tank-automotive equipment to officers in armies of foreign countries. This included two tours of Yugoslavia and one in Pakistan which led to a life-long love of travel.

Dick worked at several different occupations before finally finding his chosen career teaching Mechanical and Civil Engineering at the University of Hartford where he taught for 32 years as a professor and eventually the department head.

Dick enjoyed exploring and in 1967, he took a two-year leave from the University of Hartford and joined an India Education Project sponsored by Ohio State University and spent two years teaching in Bhubaneswar, Orissa, India.

Upon returning to the University of Hartford, he had the opportunity in 1983 to take a sabbatical leave for one year and teach at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado. He also spent the summer of 1989 teaching in Malaysia.

Carolyn & Dick moved from Connecticut to Maine where they were married in 2006.  They then spent many happy years together and were able to travel extensively.

Dick leaves behind his wife, Carolyn, children: Mark, Keith, Lisa, and stepchildren: Rob, Gary, Kathy, Tim, John, Debbie, Claudia, as well as, many grand-children and great-grand-children. He touched many lives.

To honor Dick's memory, we will be holding a celebration of his life at the family's convenience in Simsbury CT.
