Obituary

Richard "Dick" Horton, 86, passed away on April 28, 2026, at his home in Scarborough, Maine. He is survived by his beloved wife of 43 years, Nancy, and his children, Candie and her husband Christopher Sprague, John and his wife Tricia, and Lori and her husband David Kenney. He was blessed with six grandchildren, Jacob, Celine, Sarah, Tyler, Alayna, Ryan and six great-grandchildren, Peter, Quinn, Jonah, Arthur, Whitt, and Evelyn. He is also survived by his brother, Chuck, and his wife, Cindy. Dick cherished the time he spent with his family and dear friends.

Dick was born and raised in Rochester, New York and found his way to Maine after enlisting in the US Coast Guard. He served his country at the South Portland base from 1956-1960. One of his greatest experiences was participating in the veteran's Honor Flight to Washington, DC in April 2023.

He spent many years as an auto mechanic before changing careers to become a petroleum transport driver for Merrill Transport and Irving Oil. He was a hard-working, loyal employee and a member of the Maine Professional Driver's Association, retiring from Irving Oil in 2003. After retirement, he continued his love for driving through long camping trips in the US with Nancy.

Dick was a man of faith and long-time member of the United Methodist Church. He devoted many volunteer hours to the church and the South Portland Food Cupboard. Dick was known as a storyteller and had a knack for great conversation. He loved tools, woodworking and tinkering—he could fix just about anything. He was also not one to pass up a trip to Ken’s Seafood or a slice of Boston Cream pie.

Dick's family would like to extend their gratitude to the Scarbough Fire, Rescue, and Police departments, Mercy Hospital, and Dr. Mark Braun.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the South Portland Food Cupboard, a charity dear to his heart. 443 Western Avenue, South Portland, ME 04106.
