Obituary

Robert “Bob” Maurice Kelley, 90, of South Portland passed away peacefully on April 26, 2026. He was born at Maine Eye and Ear in Portland on December 22, 1935, son to the late Maurice S. and Dorothea L. (Saunders) Kelley.

Bob was educated through the South Portland School Department, graduating from South Portland High School; Class of 1954. He was involved in football and also went on to marry his school marching partner, the girl he asked to prom, Judith Holbrook. They wed on July 27, 1957 and eventually had three sons; William, Robert and Richard.

After high school, Bob served his country in the Air Force from 1954-1958; spending time in Germany for year. Bob briefly worked for Emery Waterhouse but the bulk of his career was for the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. He worked as a machinist marine and ship scheduler until his retirement in the late 80’s. Post retirement he worked for Duval’s Service Center, The Cookie Jar and Prout’s neck golf. Speaking of golf, one of Bob’s most cherished memories is when he beat George Bush Sr’s score on the 18th hole at Cape Arundel in Kennebunkport.

He was a long-time member of the Willowdale Golf Course, past Master of the Hiram Lodge in South Portland, he was the last scout master of troop 24 at the First Congregation Church as the troop attendance dwindled, and was also a “snow bird” as he and Judy spent 25 years wintering in Dale City, Florida.

Bob is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 68 years, Judith (Holbrook) Kelley; his sons, William Kelley, Robert (Florence) Kelley and Richard (Kelly) Kelley; grandchildren, Ryan, Laura, Alicia and Jamie; 6 great-grandchildren as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his sisters, Betty and Mary.
