Ronald “Ron” Harvey Hayes, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, quietly passed on to be with the Lord on July 14, 2026.

He was born in Northville, New York, on July 8, 1938, to Almond Hayes and Anna King, and grew up with two sisters, Patricia and Janice (both predeceased). Ron loved the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing, as well as woodworking and spending time with family. Famously outgoing and quick-witted, he was always ready with a joke or one-liner, even in his final days. He was known for striking up friendly conversations with complete strangers, and sometimes pretended his middle name was “Agitation” to excuse the silly trouble he often caused those around him.

As a skilled carpenter, Ron built and remodeled homes across upstate New York, from the Adirondack Mountains to the Hudson Valley, and made furniture for family, friends, and customers. He had a keen mind for figuring out ingenious solutions to engineering challenges. A veteran of the United States Air Force, he was honorably discharged after serving as an airplane mechanic at bases in the U.S. and England. He was also a member of the Northville Fire Department for many years, including time as Fire Chief.

Ron was an active member of several churches over his life, including Northville Baptist Church and People’s Bible Church in New York, and The Rock Church in Maine. He regularly exercised his social skills as a church greeter and would gladly lend a hand or a dollar to someone in need. His favorite Bible verse was Matthew 6:33, which he always quoted from the King James Version: “Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”

Ron is survived by his loving wife of more than 40 years, Sandra, of Scarborough, ME; his son Bruce Hayes of Northville, NY; his daughter Connie (Rick) Purdy of Hope Falls, NY; his stepson Scott (Marjorie) Moran of the Philippines; and his stepdaughter Bonnie (Tor) de Vries of Scarborough, ME. He is also survived by nine grandchildren: Adam Purdy and Alexandra Purdy; Janelle Moran, Christopher Moran, Megan Moran, Rebecca Moran, and Christina Moran; and Aiden de Vries and Eleonora de Vries. Ron leaves behind an extended family of many nieces, nephews, and cousins, as well.

By the end, Ron had built more than houses and furniture — he made a life of faith, friendship, and joy. He warmed the world around him with his spirit, and leaves a legacy of service, love, and humor.

A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at The Rock Church in Scarborough, ME.
