Roy Stuart Giles, 77, of South Portland, Maine, passed away on October 13th after a long illness.  Roy was born on November 9, 1944 to Wade Lougee Giles and Bernice Marguerite Stuart Giles.  He had two brothers, Wade, who died in infancy, and Gary, who was a year younger and predeceased Roy in 2009. He also had an older sister, Barbara Weymouth, who passed in 2005.

Roy met his wife, Shirley Anne Morrill, in 1977. They married in 1978 and had 44 wonderful years and 4 great children--  Angela Giles, Sarah Giles-Gardner, and Heather Giles, all of Saco, Maine, and Christopher Giles of Lisbon, Maine.

He is survived by his wife, 4 children, and 4 grandchildren (Thomas, Paeton, Connor and Jonathan), his two nephews, Philip and Joel Weymouth, and several great-great/great nieces and nephews.

Roy graduated South Portland High in the mid-sixties and was drafted into the army shortly thereafter. He was sent to Vietnam 1966-1967, where he served as a clerk/typist even though all he could do was hunt and peck on a typewriter.

Upon discharge from the service, he returned to work for IGA grocers. He had started as a bag boy at Pond Cove IGA in Cape Elizabeth while in high school, returning to work at the Yarmouth, Maine Store after his discharge. Later he transferred back to the Cape Elizabeth store as store manager, where he worked for a number of years. In 1981 the store was sold and Roy was laid off. It took almost a year to find another position, then he was hired for Paul's Food Service/Stores on Congress Street in Portland, Maine. He eventually transferred to Union Wharf Market on Commercial Street as store manager. In 2001 he purchased the store, making it his own (a lifelong dream fulfilled). He kept the name and ran the store until he retired in 2006.

Roy was an avid sports enthusiast (couch potato variety) and rarely missed any televised sporting events. His favorites of course, were Red Sox, Boston Celtics, Bruins, and Patriots. When the Portland Sea Dogs arrived in Portland, he enjoyed going to many of their games, especially with his children and grandchildren.

He was also a history buff, collecting books and often found reading or watching shows about WWI, WWII, and especially the Civil War. Of the most enjoyable trips he made were the ones he made to Gettysburg, Williamsburg and Jamestown.

When the children were younger, we often went on frequent camping trips.  He liked swimming and boating with the kids, or just sitting around the campfire.

But his favorite outdoor activity was his annual hunting outings with his in-laws. They loved to rehash and rehash their hunting adventures, and the stories got more exaggerated as time went on.

A memorial service will be held at 12:30pm on Thursday, October 20th at Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland followed by a Celebration of Life at Unity Lodge #3, 179 Ridgeland Ave, South Portland.
