Shirley M. Brown, a lifelong resident of Scarborough, Maine, passed away on December 28, 2025.

Born on March 16, 1927, to Clarence and Bessie Beckwith, Shirley grew up in Scarborough and graduated from SHS in 1945. On February 7, 1947, she married Norman "Brownie" Brown, beginning a life together that was centered on family and community.

Shirley's work life began at 17 at Len Libby Candies on Spurwink Road. She was so dependable that she managed the store while the owner, Fern Hemond, was away in the service. Later, Shirley spent over 25 years at Vose-Smith Florist in Portland, where she worked until her retirement. Many in town also knew her from her years spent as a "Mall Walker," where she stayed active and made a whole new circle of dear friends.

For 50 years, Shirley was a devoted member of the First Congregational Church of Scarborough. She was active in the Women's Fellowship and was a fixture at the annual Christmas Fair, where she worked the Greens Table. Shirley was known far and wide for her floral arrangements and her "beautiful bows," which added a special touch to many local holidays. She also gave her time to the Scarborough Lioness Club for many years.

In 2017, Shirley moved to Kaler Vaill Independent Living on Black Point Road. Her family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff and administrators—Jenny Wren, Karen Murphy, Deborah Temm and Judy Savage—as well as the team at Scarborough Terrace, for the friendship and care they provided her.

Shirley was predeceased by her husband, Norman; her son, Gary N. Brown; her siblings, Clarence Beckwith (Beverly), Robert Beckwith, and Marie Brown; and her brother-in-law, Robert Brown.

She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Joanne Brown; grandsons, Steven Brown and Darren Brown (Christel); and three great-grandsons, Benjamin, Nicholas, and Adam Lewis. She is also remembered by her nieces, Cindy Fallona (Mark), Roberta Brown, Terri Brown, and Carla Halvorson (Eric); great-nephews Michael and Jeffery Fallona; several cousins in Canada; and her longtime special friend, Winnona Potvin.

A service to celebrate Shirley's life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 3, 2026, at the First Congregational Church, 167 Black Point Road, Scarborough. A reception will follow downstairs in the Vestry. Shirley will be laid to rest at Black Point Cemetery in the spring.
