After a long battle with cancer Steve Horvath passed away on February 6, 2025.  Steve was born in 1947 in Yokohama Japan and placed in a Catholic orphanage.  He was named Shozo Sugiyama.  In 1951 he was adopted by Stephen and Janette Horvath who were serving in the U.S. military stationed in Japan.  In 1956 he came to the United States, became a naturalized citizen and was renamed Stephen Joseph Horvath.  He and his family moved to Tampa, Florida where he attended grade school and high school.

In 1964 he entered the U.S. Coast Guard and was stationed in several New England bases and had a tour in Viet Nam.  After suffering an injury, he was transferred to Boston Coast Guard Base for medical treatment.  During his stay in Boston, he took courses at Northeastern University.  He also found his soul mate Peggy Henson.  In July 1970 he was honorably discharged from the Coast Guard with the rank of E4.  On his birthday, July 18th he and Peggy were married.  They moved to Tallahassee, Florida where he attended junior college and Florida State University receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in nursing in 1973.  His nursing career included clinical work in medical surgery, neurology, obstetrics, and emergency medicine.  He also served as the clinical instructor for the paramedic program affiliated with Tallahassee Community College, became an ultrasound technologist, and worked in home health management.  His last twelve years were spent at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital emergency department as a psychiatric emergency response nurse.  In 2008 he retired, and he and Peggy spent their time between Tallahassee and their summer home in Scarborough, Maine finally settling full time in Maine in 2019.

His passion was golfing, and he was an active member of Dutch Elm Golf Club in Arundel, Maine. He found a great group of friends in the club and gained a long-term special bond with Lee Hall.

He is survived by his wife Peggy and beloved dog Sadie; his brother Luke, sister and brother-in-law Carolyn and John; nieces Leah and Rebecca (Rick), nephew David, great nieces Maddy, Meredith, and Amelia, and great nephew Quinn.

During the past three years Steve was provided outstanding care by doctors and staff at Maine Health Cancer Care, Maine Medical Center, Maine Health Palliative Care, and Maine Veterans Home.

A funeral mass is scheduled for February 14, 2025, at 1 p.m. at Saint Margaret's Catholic Church, 6 Saco Avenue, Old Orchard Beach, Maine.
