Sylvia Elaine Leathe, 93, of Wells, Maine, died from a valiant battle with dementia on May 23, 2024, at Cape Memory Care in Cape Elizabeth, Maine.

She was born in Salem, Massachusetts in 1930 to Harold, Sr. and Dorothy Whitehead Leathe. She was in the Beverly Hospital Nursing Program where she was capped in 1948 then pursued her career as an RN at Salem Hospital, Massachusetts.

She was preceded in death by her father, Harold, Sr., her mother Dorothy, her brothers and their wives, Harold, Jr. Leathe – Sandra (Coffin), Norman "Mike" Leathe – Joann (Zimmerman), and her youngest brother Paul Leathe – JoAnne (Watman),  her nephew's son, Matthew Leathe and her nephew Russell Stuart Leathe. Her surviving family members, spouses and children, are Robin Elaine Leathe, Debra Jane Leathe, Micheal Scott Leathe, Jennifer (Williams) Leathe, Donald Leathe, Steven Leathe, Jeff Leathe and Jeremy Leathe, her nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held at The Congregational Church of Wells, UCC, Wells, Maine on Sunday, July 14, 2024, at 3pm which would have marked her 94th birthday. A private family burial will be held at the Greenway Cemetery in Salem, MA at a future date. All are welcome to celebrate this amazing family member and friend.

Sylvia loved life, her family, friends and God. One of her hobbies was the joy of knitting Christmas stockings for all her family members, sweaters, and scarves for friends as well. Living by the ocean was her joy. She loved walking on the beach and finding treasures, swimming, packing a picnic lunch, and enjoying the warmth of sunshine on her face. As a true New England fan, she cheered for the Red Sox, Bruins and Patriots never missing a game. She also loved watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune.

She was very passionate about her role as an RN working with her mother, Dorothy (Nini) at Salem Hospital. When in the nursing home, she continued being a nurse and reminding her care givers how things should be done.

Sylvia was very active in her community of Wells by volunteering at the Chamber of Commerce, The Ditty Box Thrift Shop, and Soup's On. She was an active member of The Congregational Church of Wells where she developed deep friendships.
