Captain Theodore "Ted" Joseph Meserve, USN retired, passed away at the age of 82 on September 28, 2024 at his home on the beach with loved ones.

A native of South Portland, Maine, Ted was born on Aug 6, 1942 to the late Joseph L. Meserve and Gladys (Hebert) Cass.

He was a talented high school athlete earning numerous recognitions & accolades in football, basketball, and baseball to include multiple Cappy Johnson Awards.

He entered the U.S. Navy in the Officer Candidate Airman Program at Pensacola, FL in 1965 and completed three Vietnam tours (1966-1969) on various aircraft carriers as a Bombardier/Navigator in the EA-1F Skyraider and A-6 Intruders. Some of his career highlights include: Commanding Officer (1982-1984) of Tactical Electrical Warfare Squadron 134 where he flew EA-6B Prowlers; two tours of duty in the Chief of Naval Operations Office (Plans, Policy, & Operations) Washington, D.C.; and an overseas tour in Seoul, Korea where he filled two positions as the Chief of Naval Operations Section for United Nations Command/U.S. Forces Korea and Executive Officer for the Naval Operations Section of the Republic of Korea/U.S. Combined Forces Command. Ted is also a graduate of the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, and the National War College at Ft. McNair, Washington, D.C.

To know Ted, was to love him. He touched so many lives with his generous nature, quick wit, and humor. His personality was larger than life and it was evident in everything that he did from the sports he played to his long military career. Through all his accomplishments, what he cherished the most was the time that he spent with his family, especially his role as Bubba.

Ted loved to travel and spend time with friends.  He was a fixture on the beach and could always be found on his long daily walks, chatting along the way. He always said, "It's not the size of the dog in the fight, its the size of the fight in the dog" and "I am just an average guy trying to do an above average job" and he really lived true to these words.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years Angela Luzzi Meserve, his three daughters Megan Scott and spouse Justin Scott, CDR Sara Wallace, USCG retired and spouse Terrance Wallace, and Morgan Cousins.  He is also survived by his 8 grandchildren who loved their "Bubba" dearly - Ellie, Wyatt, Cody, Mackenzie, Finian, Caden, Cassidy, and Lucas.

How lucky are we to have had a man like him in our lives.

Memorial will be held at the Maine Military Museum this Saturday, October 5th, 1-3pm . (50 Peary Terrace, South Portland, Me 04106)

A Military Honors Service will be held at the Veterans Cemetery in Augusta, ME in the Spring of 2025.
