Thomas Benjamin Woll

February 26, 1948 - December 25, 2024

Thomas Woll, age 76, passed away in Scarborough, Maine on December 25th, 2024 after a fierce battle with Parkinson's disease.

Tom was born in New York City on February 26, 1948 to Bernice Shifte Woll and Milton Woll. Tom spent his childhood in New Rochelle and Larchmont, NY and graduated from Mamaroneck High School in 1966. He attended The University of Wisconsin-Madison (class of 1970) earning a BA and MA in English and an MBA from New York University's Stern School of Business. Tom married Elizabeth Ann Wentz in 1972.

Tom pursued a successful career in publishing as an editor, author, consultant, publisher and professor. He began his career in the family business as Vice President and General Manager of Vanguard Press before continuing on to several major publishing houses and eventually founding Cross River Publishing Consultants in Katonah, NY. Tom was an adjunct professor at New York University and Simon Fraser University and authored Publishing For Profit: Successful Bottom-Line Management for Book Publishers, which saw 5 editions and was translated into 10 languages. In its heyday it was called the "bible of the industry" by the Associated Press.

Tom was unexpectedly witty, extraordinarily intelligent, and incredibly hard working but will be most remembered as an exemplary father, grandfather, and husband. During his short retirement, he enjoyed splitting his time between Maine and New York to be closer to his grandchildren. He loved to play tennis, watch musicals, and eat as much lobster and oysters as he could. In addition to his nightly martini, he loved a good book and his dogs. Never a fair weather fan, he was an avid baseball and football lover devoted to the Mets and Giants.

Tom was preceded in death by his mother, father, and brother, Andrew (Andy) Woll.

Tom is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, daughters, Rebecca Woll and husband Tom Kropf (Cape Elizabeth, ME), Hannah Woll and husband Brian Stebner (Alexandria, VA), and granddaughters Etta, Shea, Leni, and Wren.

The family will have a small memorial at a later date.
