Wendy Carey, a light of courage and hope to all who knew her, peacefully passed away on April 11th, 2024, surrounded by family.

Born in Oklahoma, raised in Iowa and Minnesota, Wendy's parents instilled in her and her three younger siblings an abiding sense of faith that carried them throughout their lives.

She was smart and hardworking, receiving a bachelor's degree in social work from Macalester College in only three short years. On her way to a Master's degree from the University of Chicago, her plans shifted when she met and married a Bates College graduate and Pearl Harbor survivor, named Lawrence Carey. Together over the next 55 years they embarked on a journey filled with love, adventure, and three wonderful children, David, Lynn and Lisa.

Her life was not without hardship. She lost her son David when he was 40, and her husband Larry when he was 82. Her faith throughout remained unwavering.

She lived a life of service, volunteering at the Maine Medical Center Flower Box for 37 years. She visited the sick and housebound. She taught Sunday school at the Baxter School for the Deaf and was a member of too many clubs to name. She loved to play games and was a collector and believer in angels.

For over twenty years, her First Lutheran Church family gave Wendy solace and joy, she was active in a variety of committees and a founding member of the Give a Child a Chance educational fund.

She was a devoted and caring grandmother of five and a great-grandmother of four.

At 90 she moved to Windham Maine from her home of 57 years in Cape Elizabeth. There she lived with her daughter Lynn and next door to her daughter Lisa and son-in-law Jim. She loved life and offered 'joy and blessings' to all who knew her.

As we mourn the loss of this remarkable woman, let us celebrate Wendy Carey's extraordinary life and the legacy of love, hope, and faith she leaves behind.

Predeceased by husband Lawrence, son David, parents Edgar and Anna Otto, sister Rachel and brother-in-law Michael Wagner, sister Rebecca Fry, brother Edgar and sister-in-law Rosemary Otto.

Survived by daughters Lynn Carey and Lisa Bernier (Jim), daughter-in-law Nicki Carey, brother-in-law Vic Fry. Grandchildren Beau Carey (Aly), Alicia Grady (Tim), Joanna Williams (John), Sam Leblanc (Sarah) and Kayla Horne. Great Grandchildren David and Henrietta Carey and Landon and Jocelyn Grady. And many much loved, nieces and nephews.

Visitation is scheduled from 4pm-7pm on Thursday, April 25th at Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland. Funeral Service will be held at 10am on Friday, April 26th at First Lutheran Church, 132 Auburn Street, Portland, immediately followed by a reception in the church hall from 11am-1pm. Following the reception, interment will take place in Riverside Cemetery, Cape Elizabeth.
