Obituary

Winifred Marie (McGonigal) Green passed away peacefully on April 18 after a short battle with cancer. She was 94. Winnie was born on August 8, 1928 in Philadelphia, PA to Florence (McCanney) and Joseph McGonigal. After her graduation from Immaculata College in 1950, she took education courses at University of Pennsylvania while teaching in the Philadelphia public schools. In 1952, Winnie married the love of her life, Bob Green, a Boston native, US Marine veteran and Villanova '50 graduate. They settled in Newton, MA, and raised four children. Winnie was an active volunteer in school, church and local political organizations until her return to graduate school at Lesley College, where she earned a M. Ed in learning disabilities. She taught at Newton North High School with a group of smart and supportive women, and took advantage of school trips to distant places such as Egypt, Russia and Morocco. She retired in 1992 after the birth of her first grandchild and embraced her new role as "Gram Green." After the untimely death of Bob in 1996, Winnie moved to their Cape Cod cottage and continued to focus on family, friends and involvement in local nonprofits. In 2017, she moved to Piper Shores in Scarborough, ME where she made dear friendships. It was Winnie's wit, intelligence, honesty and sense of style that people remarked. As a lifelong learner, she was a voracious reader and her first task each day was to tackle the NY Times crossword puzzle. She had a special spark that will live on in those who knew and loved her.  Winnie is survived by her son, Bob (Michele) of Beverly, MA; her daughter, Joanne of San Francisco, CA; her son Jack of Hilton Head, SC; and her daughter Susan (Joseph) Spagnola of Cape Elizabeth, ME. She also leaves five grandchildren Maddie (Spagnola) Harpster, Olivia Levine, Thomas Spagnola, and Wyatt and Jake Green.  A memorial service will be held at a later date in Falmouth, MA. Gifts in Winnie's name may be made to Preble Street, Development Department, 55 Portland Street, Portland, ME 04101, https://www.preblestreet.org/donate/
