Obituary

Gorham – With profound love and sadness, we share the passing of Winifred Jean Young Slocum. On January 1, 2023, our Mom died peacefully at the age of 87 in Gorham, Maine. She was born on May 15, 1935 to Anne and Thomas Young in Harvard, Massachusetts. Family was everything to Mom and she proudly spoke of her five children, Philip, Linda, Richard, Jennifer, and Nathan to whoever would listen. Mom was a very talented artist. She especially enjoyed drawing and painting. We treasure her artwork and proudly display it in our homes. She collaborated with her daughter, Jen, on a children's book and music CD. The music CD, "Let Us Be Friends," has been shared and enjoyed by countless families and their children. Mom truly had an adventurous spirit. She raised and raced sled dogs for many years. She inspired her children, Phil, Rick, Jen, and Nate to try sled dog racing! Along with raising her children, she worked as a Librarian at the Brown Memorial Library in Baldwin, Maine and as a substitute teacher in the South Portland grade schools. She is warmly remembered, and loved by the children she worked with. Mom is an inspiration to us all as demonstrated by her achieving her Bachelor's Degree in Human Service at Springfield College in Massachusetts at the age of 54! What an amazing achievement! Mom was a diehard Patriots fan and liked nothing more than Sunday dinner and football with her children, Linda and Nathan. Over the years, this became a family tradition. She was a kind, generous, and happy person who was quick to smile and support anyone in need. She was a wonderful Mom, Grandmother, neighbor, and friend. We are blessed to have had her in our lives for so many years and will always fondly remember her as, "The Mom."

Her parents, Anne and Tom Young, her sister, Margaret Mathews, and her beloved son, "Philsie" - Phil, predeceased Winnie. She is survived by her children, Linda Barker, Richard Slocum, Jennifer Thayer, Nathan Slocum, thirteen grandchildren and many great grandchildren.

Services and a Celebration of Life will be held on May 7, 2023 at 1:00 PM at Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland, Maine 04106.
