Edward Lawrence Mardigan "Hall of Famer" Edward L. Mardigan of Portland died peacefully after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson's disease on Tuesday, Nov 5, 2013 at the Maine Veterans' Home in Scarborough. Edward was born on May 5th, 1931, the son of Armenian Immigrants, Lucy Amergian Mardigan and Sooren Mardigan in Detroit Michigan. Raised in Portland, Me. Edward went to Deering High School and was an " All Letter All Sport Athlete" excelling in baseball as a pitcher, basketball and football. After high school, he went on to New Hampton Prep. School and attended Bates College where he was a star athlete at both schools. Ed then did a tour of duty in the Korean Conflict with the 2nd Infantry Division and earned the "Combat Infantry Badge". Upon his return he played in several twilight baseball and softball leagues never wanting to put the glove down! Ed also was one of the founding partners of the Portland Seahawks semi-pro football team. In 2002, Ed was recognized for his athleticism and was inducted into the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame for his outstanding pitching abilities. Raised in the grocery business alongside his father, Ed owned and operated the Hillside Red & White Market in South Portland for many years. He went on to own Amergian Brothers Market with his daughter Julie alongside him. Amergian Brothers was originally started by his Uncle, George Amergian. While running the market he sucessfully bought and rehabilitated several apartment buildings which are now operating as family shelters on Chestnut Street in Portland. Ed's passion in life was baseball and automobiles. He could talk about baseball and cars for hours it seemed. Ed was also very proud of his Armenian Heritage. It meant a lot to him knowing that his father was a survivor of the Armenian genocide. Edward is predeceased by his sister. Sylvia Mardigan Tevanian and his nephew, Jeffrey Tevanian. He is survived by his former wife Jean E. Mardigan of Cape Elizabeth, his children Stephen E. Mardigan and partner Patricia Nixon of Portland, Julie A. Mardigan of South Portland and Leslie and Normand Poulin of South Portland. His two grandchildren, Stefani Greco and Emme Poulin. His brother in law; Arthur Tevanian and niece; Elisabeth Miles and family of Livingston, NJ, along with many cousins. Ed will be remembered for his "quick wit" and a certain way to instill his opinion on you whether you liked it or not! His presence will be missed by his family and friends. The family is more than grateful to the staff at Maine Veterans' Home for their outstanding care and compassion for Ed. They truly are remarkable. At his request, a graveside service will be held at 11 am Friday November 8, 2013 at the Armenian section of Forest City Cemetery in South Portland. Friends and family are welcome to attend.
